Did Gillette make an aluminum #66? I thought a #66 weighed about 75-80 grams, but I just bought one that only weighs 36 grams.
I don't think so. Aluminium would weigh much less. I know the #16 is in that (heavy) weight vicinity.
Yea Rick, Gillette did in fact manufacture British aluminum #66's.. but they're scarce compared to their heavier counterparts. Consider yourself lucky Gillette also made aluminum #58's which are even more difficult to come by.. I believe MTGrayling had one in his collection at one time. What set did your #66 come with or was it a loner? Posts pics when you get a chance!
So your telling me I need to find an aluminum #66 now? I got lucky to get an unexpected aluminum #58 already.
Must...not...gloat... Anyway, here's some pictures. If not for the stains on the lid liner, this thing looks like new.
Thanks for the info, Scott. When I first took it out of the box, I thought, "What the f***?!!", but now I'm pretty stoked about it. I figure if I want the "heavier" shave, I can use my #16, so it's nice having something different. BTW, I would still like to know what the other #66 weighs
Fantastic razor, Rick. Now, how did you get yours so fast? I'm still waiting for mine bought from the same buyer, same day. Your influence is inspiring...
Now THAT is a good question! The seller mailed it on 5/5, and it showed up in only 4 days! That has to be some kind of record for regular air mail coming from the UK to California.
I guess you learn something new everyday! Maybe it's just me, but I always associate aluminum with "cheap" things. What was Gillette thinking when they made a premium razor in that material? I can't imagine how would be to shave with a #66 with half the weight.
I thought the same thing, but then look at aluminum bicycle frames and car rims -- they can really get up there in price.
