Just curious. Is it possible to define the major categories of scent for soaps?

So far, all I can think of:

    Tobacco
    Leather
    Floral
    Citrus
    Fruity
Cologne (this might fall into others but this is a blatant attempt to match something)
    Methol
    Earth
    Wood
    Ocean/Waterside
    Rain
    Grass
    Spicy
    Woodsy/forest
    Herbal
    Roasted

If I missed some, feel free to add.

Which categories do you like best?

Do you have a soap or cream that is the best in that category?

    For me:

Citrus: do not have a favorite now.
Cologne: Stirling Sharp Dressed Man, Executive Man
    Wood: TOBS - Sandalwood

"Spice". Bay Rum being a primary example of a spice type scent.

I would also add "woodsy" or "forest" as category. Meaning it has notes of cedar, pine, conifer scents. Examples - Captain's Choice "North", Stirling "Coniferous", and Barrister & Mann "Taiga".

In a previous discussion I posted this Wheel Of Scents. Not totally inclusive but it may give you some more ideas. This isn't specific to soaps, just scents in general.

I've found basenotes.net to be a great resource to discover the components in aftershaves, colognes, etc.

    Gotcha. Added them
For me through, I would put Cedar in the Wood category along with sandalwood and the like. At first, I was thinking of pine scents to be in the Wood category but I think I agree they should be separate.

They are all "wood". I guess where I'm coming from is the "forest" scents which sandalwood doesn't do it for me in that sense.

That wheel is excellent. I saved it earlier when you put it up. It has been a big help to me in trying to figure out how to describe a scent.

My favorites are woodsy scents; juniper, pine, sandalwood, cedar and such. I also like the grapefruit I purchased for my wife (Captain's), but tend to lean towards the woodsy scents for myself.

That's a lot of wheels. Like a dictionary. I prefer to keep it simple and just say "it stinks good" like woodsy, flowery, fruity, or citrusy

I mainly stick with my Almond/Marzipan/Cherry/Vanilla scents. I don't like super aggressive fragrances, but a nice smooth and mellow Almond scent is amazing.

I like fougre scents. I guess you could call it a "mossy" type scent.

Also Russian Leather, which is a leather and birch oil combination.

In a trade I got a tub of Klar's Mandel. This is the most powerful almond scent I've encountered. I have yet to take it for a shave. I do like Cella for its Marzipan aroma. Klar is a cake to the face. :shocked029::cool:

I've got to eat some crow. Russian leather scent is what I thought Cologne Russe was. What B&M Cologne Russe actually is:
"bright citrus notes of lemon, petitgrain and bergamot which are grounded by back notes of vanilla, violet and amber."
