I recently picked up a bottle of aftershave balm made by the Wm. Neumann & Co.—a respected maker of shaving products made, according to their tagline, "…with the finest herbal extracts and essential oils." They make a good variety of "old-fashioned looking" scented aftershaves and balms, and the bottle I tried was their 'Heartwood' aftershave balm. What is 'heartwood'? According to Wm. Neumann, the heartwood scent is "...A truly first-class refined outdoorsy, woodsy fragrance—Fresh Bergamot and Spices combine with Blue Spruce, Sweet Bourbon Whiskey, Pipe Tobacco, Leather, Mimosa Flower, Guaiac Wood, Oakmoss and Myrrh to create a very masculine & warm fragrance." I cannot say I can detect any one particular scent from that myriad list of ingredients, but I did find the scent to be very pleasing. Definitely Masculine. Woodsy. Nothing 'powdery' nor 'flowery' about the fragrance. The balm is a creamy white substance, fairly thick that goes on smoothly and is absorbed quickly. Nothing greasy feeling about the application, nor is there any residual oily sheen to the skin. The balm left my skin feeling refreshed, smooth and soft to the touch. The scent does linger, but pleasantly so. The balm is alcohol-free, so it soothes without stinging. A little goes a long way, so this 4-ounce bottle should last a good long time. Here is the ingredient list for this balm: Organic Aloe and Witch Hazel—Soothes and calms irritated skin Coconut Oil, Glycerin and Jojoba Oil—Naturally hydrates and softens the skin Vitamin E and Grape Seed Extract—Powerful natural antioxidants, encourage the healing process Oat Straw and Black Willow Bark Extracts—Well known for their healing and astringent qualities Rosemary and Neem Oil—Naturally fight bacteria If you're looking to try a quality post-shave product to soothe your skin, I'd have no reservations about recommending this balm. It isn't inexpensive ($28 for a 4 oz. bottle), but the quality of the ingredients used is worth the price, in my opinion. I will make this balm a regular part of my post-shave product rotation.
They have a website and are based out of Williamsburg VA. I have wanted to try this balm myself.....but could not get over the price. I am getting closer to getting some now with your excellent review.
Hmmm... I may have to try this. As an important side note: avoid this stuff is you're allergic to asprin. Willow extract (salicylic acid) is an asprin (acetyl-salicylic acid) pre-cursor and you will probably react to it.
Thanks for the good word. I've had their website stored in my favorites for many months but haven't purchased anything yet. I like the packaging of their products so much that I would keep the bottle on display even if I didn't like the contents.
I think they've done a commendable job of replicating the 'old world' charm of gentleman's shaving in their packaging. The content of the bottle is pretty darn good stuff as well.
For $2.00 plus shipping, I purchased a Wm. Neumann aftershave sampler kit. Each vial contained enough product for 2 to 3 shaves. Very nice and enjoyable. My fav is the Lime and Mint Rum Splash. All of their splashes are also available in balm. The sampler kit also included a bar of Peppermint Leave Soap. Excellent !!!
I use Wm. Neumann's Heartwood Aftershave and love it. I bought some shower soap, and beautiful shaving cup and some other shaving items and the sampler. They sent me an email and said since I spent so much that they sent the sampler for free (plus a free bar of soap). I really like the Heartwood and the 1907 aftershave. Below is what in thought of some of the aftershaves, remember everyone skin is different so you may like something I did not. Old fashion soda- some people love it, others hate it- my daughter said it reminded her of soda cap candy, which she liked Bay Rum - again some will love it, I personally don't, very heavy in the clove scent. Lime and mint rum- heavy in the lime, nice, but something I would not use often Absolute Zero - a more floral type smell, Peppermint Cloves - both are prominent smells, nice but I am not thrilled with cloves, just a personal thing 1911 - very nice smell, sweet yet manly Signature 1907-another nice aftershave Heartwood-my favorite- a very woodsy smell with a hint of pipe tobacco, this is one I can use daily. Hope this helps
Thanks Littlemax for informing me on the available purchase of their sampler kit. I'm a newbie and learning about the fragrances and product qualities is a lot, so sampler kits are a great way to try something with lower risks. I've purchased sampler kits from other vendors and always interested in finding more - yes the obsession is strong! Haha
This stuff also works great as a pre shave balm, no kidding. After shower apply liberaly and massage in leaving a film on skin and beard. Then apply shave cream or soap and shave. I have had great results doing this with the Wm. Neumann & Co after shave balms. I have the Heartwood the 1907 and the Lime Rum scents. They are very nice after shave balms with great scents but again they also work great as a pre shave balm. I use it as a Pre shave balm on a regular basis more often than as an after shave balm with great results. Happy Shave On To All, Bill G
Thanks for sharing this, Bill. I am fond of this balm, although I can honestly say I've never considered it as a pre-shave treatment. I've been meaning to try W Neumann & Co soaps as well. On my list…..
I may try some samples in the new year. This is helpful info for me....I like what I read about Neumann, but it's a little over my budget.
I have the AS balm I the 1911 scent along with the shave soap. I just received as a gift for Christmas Lime/mint I believe along with the mint shave soap and they both smell fantastic. I agree the balm has no greasy feel or shine after use I really enjoy it. I believe the Lime/mint scent is a splash AS if I remember correctly but still great stuff. I like every product I have used from them so far.
I bought a sampler myself some time ago, and liked a good number of them. But, my favorites are both the 1911 and 1907 in the classic "Alcohol" formulation and LOVE them both. The "Old Fashioned Soda" smells just like Barq's Rootbeer. The other one I'd like to try sometime is the Lime & Mint. The stuff is expensive at $30 a bottle, but it's well worth it for the scent that has staying power, and it has great skin care qualities too. I wouldn't hesitate to tell you to get the sampler, and if you like them, a full bottle or two. It's just great stuff like I said!
The lime and mint is amazing I received a bottle for Christmas and its awesome! Spend the $30 on yourself and get it
