Hey guys. Picked up this brush for $3. Ever Ready 100t Figure I would try to learn to re-knot on this one. Not sure if I need to remove more. Also how do I measure for the new knot? Depth and width?
A nickel is about 20mm. A quarter is 24mm. What knot are you thinking of? Edit: you can take out all of that stuff. The handle is hollow. You can put in a false bottom and even add some weight to it while you are at it.
Thank you Jayaruh So remove more depth? Was thinking a boar knot. But open for recommendations. I face lather and have been using soft soaps like CC and PAA.
Not sure if that inner ring should come out. It's 19mm right now. The outside measurement of that inner ring is 24mm
A boar would do very well in that handle. I would just clean it out and when you get the knot you can open it so it fits. That nickel looks like it just fits. So, a 20mm boar would probably be the best.
If you are doing the boar, you can probably use the bottom that is there unless you want to add some weight. I used plumbers putty in one of mine. It added some real heft to it. You can also cut a dowel to make a bottom for the new knot. When I use badger knots, I set them at about 55mm loft. Boars, I like to set higher. Edit: I am sure that there is more good information out there. Someone else will chime in I'm sure.
I've used coins for weight. Drop some in and add epoxy. To get the hole big enough, I used a deep well socket just slightly smaller than the hole and wrapped a piece of sandpaper around it and went at it until I got it big enough to hold the knot I was putting in. There are many right ways and fewer wrong ways of going about it. Basically, whatever you need to do to accomplish the goal is sufficient. Doing well so far, keep up the good work and keep up the pics!
Is there anyplace you guys recommend for the knot? I saw a black badger knot, the color might go nicely with the black and white handle.
I drilled out that shelf and opened it up to fit I believe a 24mm black badger knot on mine. I filed the handle with epoxy. This is after sanding and polishing the handle. I also knocked down the corners a bit.
I agree that a black knot would be great with the black and white Ever Ready! This is the only picture I could find of mine. It’s a synthetic TGN knot, I think 20 or 22mm. I drilled through the shelf, but wish I hadn't. If you do, you will need to fill the inside of the handle to have a place for the knot to set. I used a dowel and some nickels, and secured everything with silicone. It should be easier to take apart if I ever want to change it, or if someone else starts working on it 30 years from now. Good job so far!
Just by looking, I can tell that knot is going to be pretty floppy, due to the height of the loft. That can be a good thing if you are wanting to offset the pure/black badger scritch. If you want more backbone, you'll probably need to set it about 3mm deeper. It's decisions like these that have us setting our knots with silicone until we get them 'dialed in.'
