What Straight Razor Did You Use Today?

Kevin, I honestly didn't think it was too much different. The CJB centers the bevel of the injector blade much like a full hollow grind does, in principle. Utilizing the "two spine width" rule will put the blade at about the correct angle.

The main difference I noticed was that the center of mass feel closer to handle than on a folding straight. Also the lack of tugging/screaming sensation and no audio feedback meant pressure control meant more than with a straight. The shave went fine. I had a couple of minor weepers under the nose, mostly due to bad angle, but it went normally. Face feels fine now, maybe four hours post shave.

I would describe myself as competent with straight. Any of you reading this would be successful with a CJB/Kai Captain combo, but I don't see many of you forsaking old steel in favor of this particular method.

Unlike a straight the CJB will cut skin (cause damage) without warning or feeling. It also lacks the weight of traditional SR which makes it hard to use light pressure and light pressure is what is needed. If does like a similar angle as traditional SR or even with the spine closer to your face. Just be mindful of your technique and resist the tendency to use pressure to shave and you will be fine. Also the edge will not feel as 'smooth' as well honed SR.

This is my experience as well. The major difference in "use" to me, is that a conventional straight will give out a tiny bark before it bites. Enough that if you're paying attention, the damage can be avoided. A shavette however will simply remove the offending chunk of flesh.

Hello TSD. I had a Bay Rum Shave today:

    1603_ji.jpg

My straight technique is improving - nice shave today, though still not nearly as close as a DE or SE razor shave. AND I noticed that the shave has been a bit more effective on the right hand side of my face than on the left. After two passes with the Gold Dollar I had so much lather left that I added a third pass with the Schick G, so the final result is somewhere between DFS+ and BBS.
And as you can see, my wife did some easter decoration yesterday ;)

I just started dabbling in honing. I know it's early and I should wait a bit, but it's how I am. I have a Norton 4k/8k and a naniwa 12k. Two of my razors were honed in skilled hands so I have a reference. I was able to get one razor nice and sharp, shaves great. It already had a decent edge though. More of a refresh than a bevel set. My other one I am not doing as well with. Need more practice to get it right. Since I now have three that shave great, I can take my time with that one, and if I destroy it, it isn't a horrible thing. I hope I don't though...

So, in short, an AAA blade isn't too difficult. Gssixgun and Lynn Abrahms have some great videos on YouTube. It's the less than great ones that need a developed hand. That can take a lifetime, I imagine.

This is for the newcomers to wet shaving.
You don't have to be totally obsessed with wet shaving to enjoy it.
    Below are my basics:

    [IMG] Illinois 361 strop
[IMG]seven SR and two de razors in rotation and 3 types of brushes. 3 different soaps.

And finally my wet shaving collection of yesterday:

Plus a 5 stone naniwa hone set and stone holder. A specialty set of 5 stones and holder are about $250 from sharpening supplies.com. Strops are $40? For the 361 there also. Dry gulch also makes and sells strops of excellent quality. Gssixgun, holyroller, entropy, and some of the more advanced members of tsd are more than happy to assist in answering questions about your SR interests. And are very knowledgeable. Come join the dark side of the the wet shavers and learn the true joy of using a SR

Excellent example of all that is needed. No "need" to have extravagant amounts of everything. A few options to change things up....
