Im sure liking my V2 with the Maggards MR8 handle. The weight and the size the handle really seem to work well. BBS two days in a row with a single pass and touch ups.
Wow! And I thought my V3 with a Maggard MR3 handle was massive! That must weigh close to a half pound. --Bob
Is anyone getting the AlumiGoose handle from Mongoose? The black shiny one, I got an email about it yesterday
Shave of the day Pre- Hot shower, Jumping Juniper shampoo cake from Lush Soap/cream- uberlather with Proraso white shaving soap and TOBS Sandalwood/rose shaving cream mix and some vegetable glycerine Brush- Proraso boar brush Razor- AlumiGoose Blade- Feather Artist Club Professional Super(3 or 4) Post- Cold water rinse, Humphreys witch hazel, Homemade Bay rum aftershave lotion and Talika Photo-hydra day cream Fourth shave on a Feather pro super. I didn't get the best shave, I dont know. Maybe I wasn't really feeling it. The lather was thin for the second pass but I added cream and relathered. I have some razor burn. Im gonna go back to the Feather AC pro and try them out again and compare. We'll see. A part of me thinks I need a short paus from the Alumigoose. maybe I'll use my mercer 37c or my gillette open comb.. Who knows
I was fortunate to be part of an Alumigoose pass-round on another forum recently and thought that I'd post up my findings from my time with the razor in case they are of use to anyone who is considering purchasing one, and have done so below. The razor is definitely more aggressive than a stainless steel Mongoose (either B2 or B3). This has been a consistent factor with every blade I've tried. I would go as far to say that a Kai Captain Mild feels very slightly more aggressive in this razor than a Feather Pro Super does in a standard Mongoose. In my experience, I preferred using the Alumigoose with Kai blades. I didn't notice much difference between Kai Captain and Kai Captain Mild blades when using the razor. They definitely gave a smoother shave than Feather Pro or Super blades though. I also tried a combination of differing handles (both long and short) and found that a longer handle suits the razor nicely (I settled on a UFO Kaiser 100mm as being the best combination with this head, closely followed a standard Mongoose stainless B2 handle). I found that it was not so much the weight of the head that was the major factor in this choice, but the width of the head. I reckon that this head would also pair well with a long Titanium handle as well. All-in-all, the Alumigoose is a nice razor and, if you find the standard Mongoose to be too mild, it provides a viable and equally well made alternative.
It needs to be pointed out that the Alumigoose that Maggard Razors is selling (or at least maintaining a waiting list) is the Alumigoose 2. This is a whole different animal from the original Alumigoose. The head was completely redesigned for the Alumigoose 2. I don't have an Alumigoose 1 but my Alumigoose 2 is definitely much milder than my SS Mongoose batch 3. The Feather Super Pros tear up my face in the SS Mongoose, but are the perfect match for me in the Alumigoose 2. --Bob
From the Maggard Razor News Letter on 3/22/16 "Alumigoose We've been selling Alumigoose Razors from Mongoose to people on the official wait list. If you're interested in adding yourself to the wait list, please email info@maggardrazors.com. Include your name in the email and we'll add you!"
Oh it's the whole list thing again? I thought it was going to be available on Maggards without any list. Thanks for the info though.
I'm also rather surprised to hear that - I thought the waitlist was going away. I don't think they've thought this through.
Good morning. What is the best weight, diameter, and length of an aluminum handle for a stainless steel Mongoose head? I'm thinking of decreasing the handle weight of my Mongoose SS to balance it out a bit. Thank you. I know this is subjective, but looking for some opinions from those who have swapped out their SS handles for an aluminum one.
unfortunately a lighter handle won't work well with the SS head since the head itself is way too heavy (54 grams). I tried using my parker 26c brass handle which is the same length as the original handle and it's about 60 grams or so and the razor became way too head heavy.
I have a Maggards MR20 stainless handle that I use on mine. A bit lighter but not too much. Gives the razor great balance. That of course is my deal.
I tend to use titanium or stainless handles around 55-60 grams with my SS mongoose. I prefer the balance in these configurations to the standard mongoose handle.
