References I've seen indicate they used native wid tobacco mixed with other plants. It didn't describe what those other plants were though.
Sunday morning after reading the paper and a little breakfast, a bit of Latakia seemed on order. I used a danish bit with a filter, I think the draw of the bit is too open without a filter. Since the Mark Twain has a small bowl, I had a couple.

In the southwest, it may have been peyote. Or was that chewed? I know growing up in the rural south, many folks would smoke rabbit tobacco, that grows wild.
JAEM in a Lorenzo. I smoked maybe 1/4 bowl a little earlier of Lane Ready Rubbed. Nasty stuff compared to JAEM.
Peyote is traditionally chewed in a quid or consumed as an infused drink. Peyote is a small cacti, it grows here in Colorado. Most people don't even know what it is.

Beautiful dogs! I have always enjoyed being around well-trained boxers. I have two GSPs, both black and white ticked coats, superb gun dogs, great family companions.
Yes we have been lucky we have had 4 boxers total and they have all been great dogs...I use to have hunting dogs as well, use to duck and goose hunt quite a bit before the family got me too busy was a lab guy for the longest time. After my last lab passed away the wife wanted something different so Boxers became that something different. I have hunted behind some really good GSP in Kansas and Iowa on some pheasant hunts nothing like watching a good dog work.
Yeah, the last thing you want with a Virginia is to have to work at it. That's why Virginias have to be packed a little looser than some other blends. If you struggle to get a good draw on a Virginia, your tongue will not thank you later!
