Do you hold the top of an injector flat against your face, as you do with SEs?

I lusted for a Heljestrand for some time. Then last year I scored one on an obscure French board. It's been nothing but agony since and I'm afraid the inaugural shave wasn't much better. The payment was a hassle, the shipping was a hassle, it arrived with the threads stripped, and the seller blew me off. Thanks to @twhite I got it rethreaded, then sent out a blade to be honed, and after a long delay got to take it out today. :happy088:

I really wanted to report a great shave. It wasn't abysmal but close to it. Either I can't get the angle right to save my life or I had bad luck with my choice of hone meisters. Whether the blade was flat to my face, a few degrees off, or steeper, I didn't have any smooth strokes until the 4th pass and only in one section of my face. After all of those passes and wet touch ups I barely managed a DFS. :kngt:

I have another blade to try on another day. If that one doesn't do it for me I'm going into hiding... :scared003:

At least it looks good. :happy036:

A month with my Schick Type F.
My three weeks with the F were very successful, so I’m using this last week to assess the Type G.

    Hot Shower
    Razor:1946-55 NOS G4 Schick 66 Navy (Shave 4)
Blade: The FergieFeather Mod (Feather AC Pro - cut to fit) (2)
    Soap: Route 66 - A Perfect Gent
    Brush: Stirling Kong
    TSD Witch Hazel
    AS: Myrsol Blue

    Two-pass shave - XTG, ATG
Probably didn’t even need the XTG pass and could have gone straight to one ATG pass…but I wanted to shave!
Will do one or more shaves with the great combo…and it is great but for now, the Type F/ FergieFeather are still the top combo I’ve assessed so far regarding the Schick C1, D, F or G4.

Though I never did try the FergieFeather in the D. :signs002:

    Cheers!

[I have a question on SE blades suitable for stropping. I know the old type ever ready and the likes, without the notches are good for that. What about the old micromatic and Star blades with cutouts and the tooling marks on the blade.

I found some at a junk store, but I do not want to get them if they are not the proper stropping blades.

Thanks for the advice in advance.

Tomquote="Billyfergie, post: 1046438, member: 14623"]Nah..Those are not Stropping Blades Tom..:rolleyes005:

    Hi Ken

I spoke to Tom about that answer I gave him later..I was Talkin Crap There..The Stropping blades are not Current Blades..Tom was Correct..Some of the Stropping blades that came later had cut outs the same as the current ones but the metal is more Rigid and the Spines are Thicker...You cant mistake them for Modern Blades if you have them in You're Hand..They will have a sorta brushed finish on them & not Stainless..They are also Heavier & Don't have a Multi Facet Edge..:)

Billy The blades I have say
STAR SUPER EDGE on the spine. They have a small cutout on each side and one in the center of the blade. I believe they are vintage blades the back of the box says American Safety Razor Corp. Star Division Brooklyn N.Y.
    Thanks Ken P

Sorry to hear that you had a bad experience. My C. V. Heljestrands are some of my favorite razors in my entire collection. I shaved with a C. V. Heljestrand blade that I honed last night in a Rapide this morning and it was as close a shave as any I've ever had. Yes, ever.

The technique is a little different with a wedge blade razor, especially compared to an injector. It is necessary to pull the skin taut, as with a straight razor.
Angle is simple - just really shallow, almost like using a Micromatic. For me, a really wet lather works best.

Have you used other wedge blade razors with good results?

It's possible that the honing may be at fault. Dull wedge blades tend to pull and tug a lot, and don't cut whiskers very well. I can usually tell on the very first stroke whether or not I've done a good job honing the blade.

I hope you're able to figure it out.

I hadn't thought about pulling the skin taut. I've seen that advice but didn't do that. Hopefully that will help. :happy088:

The angle should have been fine - nearly flat against the face (and I tried completely flat against the face to find the point where it stopped cutting.) I had my hopes up also since it was one of the better lathers I had made in a while. Could be the blade but the guy who honed it has a good reputation on B&B. So, I'll just have to try again... and again... and again as I haven't shaved with a wedge before. Actually I did get a decent shave from a Rolls from a blade that felt like it wasn't quite shave ready but close.
