A "cheapo microscope" is exactly what I use. Around $25 on eBay if I recall correctly.

It simply plugs into your computer (usb connector) which sees it like a webcam and you have 200x magnification.

Not only can you look at the edge, you can save screenshots and post them on the forum for endless discussion. :happy088:

This was the blade on my Rapide (now Tom's Rapide) when I first got it (in stunning VGA resolution - you don't get HD for $25).

After considerable work on the DMT's followed by lapping film, this was the final result:

Believe it or not, this is the same blade.

    Prep: Warm shower
    Blade: Chinese Schick
    Razor: Schick G1 Injector
    Brush: Semogue 1520 boar
    Lather: Boll Weevil Freedom
Post: Witch hazel splash enhanced with Freedom aftershave soother, Nivea sensitive balm
    WTG, touch-up

Dismal, bath-soap type lather was a disappointment today. This is a new soap and I think it's formulation is more for the shower than for shaving. I'll try it again tomorrow with a different brush.

The G1 performed nicely though. I look forward to using it a lot this month. Have a great day!

My brother in law has a Wilkinson Empire, but it's missing the blades and strop.
Will other types of old blades work in it?

There were Two Empire Sets..This One I had Above Took an Unusual Propriety Blade & will Not Accept another Hollow Ground Blade..The other 7 Day Set took a more Standard Hollow Ground Blade..Hollow Ground blades are Hard to come by in Decent Condition..The Ones for the Empire Set that took the Smaller Blades are like Gold Dust..I would Suggest that the Best Bet is to get another Set..These are Cheap in the UK & NOS Sets or Little Used Sets come Up Regular..:)

Its Not worth Farfing Around with a Duff or Part Missing Set..:angelic007:

The Schick D is loaded with a modded Feather blade with at least 5 shaves on it. Any signs of dulling and it will be replaced with a Chick (only blades I brought with me on my trip).

    It’s Hydro-Magic May!
I’ll spend the month with my three Schick Eversharp razors that sport the Hydro-Magic shaving/cleansing head - Types I2, J3, K1

    Hot Shower
Razor: 1958-1964 Schick Eversharp Type J3 "Golden 500"
    Blade: Schick (China) (1)
    Soap: Route 66 - Sea & Citrus
    Brush: Ever-Ready 1CS Badger
    TSD Witch Hazel
    AS: Myrsol Limon

    05-03-16.JPG

The first injector I ever used. I picked it up when I was learning to shave with DEs. I thought I might like to see if it was more convenient to use around my mustache/goatee. Oh yes it was, and with a subsequent full shave, soon thereafter I was hooked. That was about July of last year, I now own about 16 injectors!

    Two-pass shave - WTG, ATG
A very smooth comfortable shave. BBS could be achieved with minor touch-ups. Will look forward to see how these H-Ms perform with the sharper Dutch blades.

    Cheers!

    Today's Shave: Tuesday May 3, 2016

    Schick Early E2 injector razor
    Japanese Schick blade
    Plisson synthetic brush
Los Angeles Shaving Soap Co. Blackfern soap
    Fine Fresh Vetiver aftershave

These Japanese blades continue to impress - a really smooth irritation free BBS shave today. :happy088:

This soap from LA Shaving Soap Co. is amazing stuff - super slick and cushy, and incredibly easy to lather. Anyone who thinks that a great soap has to contain tallow should give this veggie soap a try - it's as good as any tallow soap I have, and better than most of them.

There are bargains to be had - it just requires patience, and acceptance of being outbid a lot. These two sets were both purchased on eBay in the USA and neither cost anywhere near $100.

The top one even came with a brand new factory sealed blade.

As Billy said, blades are everything. If the blades are missing you're buying a paperweight.

Thanks for the blade review Bob.
I see the Japanese available regularly but hadn't seen anyone use or review. Have you used the Chinese version? How do they compare?
    (ymmv, of course.)

Two shaves isn't much of a test but so far I like the Japanese Schick blades a lot. They're definitely the best modern injector blade that I have found.

Before I got them I thought that they might simply be Chinese Schick blades packaged for the Japanese market, but I can now say with some certainty that that is not the case.

Too bad that they're so expensive.

It took 2 weeks for the blades to travel from Japan to San Diego.

    Prep: Warm shower
    Blade: Chinese Schick
    Razor: Schick G1 Injector
    Brush: Semogue 1520 boar
    Lather: VDH Luxury scented
Post: Witch hazel splash, Nivea sensitive balm
    WTG, touch-up

Pretty good shave this morning. I should have touched up a couple more areas if I was able to do it again. Oh well. No big deal overall. The VDH lather was a little thin so tomorrow I'll go with less water. It wasn't overly thin but not quite as rich and luxurious as I wanted.

The G1 is continuing to provide great shaves. It's a really fun razor to use!

    Have a great day!

Day 5 of learning the wedge blade SEs. Today was a switch to my Louis Rasoir. I've always liked the looks of this razor and I've used it before with a modern GEM and shims. I'm still coming up the learning curve but the result was a super smooth face with all the face rubbing goodness that comes with it. :happy036:

Still a harsher experience that what I'd get with the GEMs but each shave is improving. I'm liking the wedges. :happy088:

    Razor: GEM PB
Brush: Vie Long Cachurro (horse hair)
    Soap: Taconic Bay Rum
    Aftershave: VIBR

I’m starting to get the hang of the horsehair brush. I have been using a fair amount of pressure face lathering, which has been my practice with my boars. I lighter touch, and the horse lathers much easier.

Sixth cycle with the CVS carbon blade, which was definitely at the end of its life cycle. I’m lazy, so I suffered through a rough shave. Ended up with a DFS, but the bay rum aftershave really reminded me that I should have loaded a new blade:) Black and White (LazyLens 20160428 093307 HD) 1.jpg
