    SOTD - Menthol Monday
60-yo newbie’s intro to traditional shaving. (Week 52 AC*)

    It’s Hydro-Magic May!
I’ll spend the month with my three Schick Eversharp razors that sport the Hydro-Magic shaving/cleansing head - Types I2, J3, K1

    Hot Shower
Razor: 1962-1968 Type K Lady Eversharp Beauty Razor
    Blade: Schick (Holland) (2)
Soap: Catties Bubbles Mile High Menthol
    Brush: Rooney 3/3 "Super" Silvertip
    TSD Witch Hazel
    AS: Myrsol Blue

Like a few others who have bought razors for their significant others, Mrs. RTF prefers shorter handled razors. So as I’m spending 2016 going through all my injectors, I reached that point in the alphabet where it was time to try it out. Testosterone-driven ego pushed aside, I stepped up to the Lady Eversharp Beauty Razor.

My excellent Sunday shave set me up with minimal whiskers today. So I planned a one-pass shave (ATG), with touch-ups.

Obviously this razor was made for short arms and long legs. (My physique is the opposite…TMI, i know.) So I choked up on the handle and enjoyed a very good shave. (yes, of my face!) :happy068:

A bit more feedback than I expected, but perhaps it was this sharp blade. Touch ups were minimal and resulted in a silky smooth shave that compares very well with my other two, manly, hydro-magic Schicks.:happy036:

    Cheers!

    Razor - Gem 1912 SE
    Blade - [IMG] (1)
    Brush - Vie-Long 12705 The Horse
    Soap - Marvy
Post - Cold Rinse, Alum, Nivea

It's the @Keithmax Wildcard MAYhem shave. I know, I know, you were all cheering for the Tiger to appear but, alas (for you), the shaving gods chose the Gem 1912. However, they also, along with Keith, chose Marvy. Yeah, so there's that. The blade is a Carbon SE blade and the brush is the Horse, which is a great brush with some soaps, not so much with others (like the Fat). It's also a bit of a shedder, though not horrible.

Head shave was first this morning and I took my time since I didn't want to break out the Marvy before it was necessary. I soaked the Marvy puck for about an hour this morning to get it back to soft and gooey. Head shave was great, shower done, can't wait any longer. Now, I want to add one thing. I really don't like the smell of Dove soap. Normally we have a Castille soap in our shower and bathroom and it is a very nice, lightly scented, vegetable based soap. Well, somebody forgot to order another batch of it (SWMBO blames me) and she bought a couple of bars of Dove to hold us over. You also know I really don't like the Marvy scent at all. Now, mix the two. Dove is hanging in the air, and when I start whipping up the Marvy, it just created a toxic cloud of fumes that really made me wish for, oh, I don't know, a drunken stupor to overcome it.

Anyway, the Horse actually did a pretty good job on the load and provided a pretty good lather as I painted it on. If you can call a Marvy lather, lather. It's more like a goopy slick mess that sticks to my face. It is, however slick and that's the main point. First pass with the 1912 and it is a fun razor to use. The feedback from this thing is incredible. Loud and nasty sounding. It's a fairly rough blade but not so rough you can't enjoy it. And, it produced a pretty good result. The angle to hold the razor at is a bit awkward but once I adapted my grip it went well. Second pass XTG again produced amazing feedback and great reduction. Went ATG and then decided, hey, it's MAYhem, let's Gillette Slide this puppy. Or, perhaps, Gem Slide is more appropriate. Did my entire neck on the slide and when I finished I had BBS baby. That razor really gets the job done.

Now, what about irritation? It's a heavier blade than a DE, and three passes plus a G-slide.....possible I'm not too badly irritated? Possible, but no way did it happen. Alum was nice and hot all over, but it's a serious BBS. I'll take the burn.

Rinsed the brush, covered the Marvy and abandoned the toxic stench around me. Onward and forward to tomorrow!

Tomorrow is the @Rufus T. shave and I'm still waiting for him to pick numbers. So far it looks like he has chosen....."a blade". I'll get that too you when Ivan gets back.

In the meantime, @Drygulch is the Chosen Chooser for Wednesday. Why am I nervous about that?! Even with randomization I'm a bit nervous about him having access to the numbers. All right gents.....choose between 1-15 for the blade, same for the razor, 1-6 for the soap, and 1-7 for the brush!

A very generous PIF from @mrchick of a Schick G1 Injector, I believe. Loaded a blade and got a DFS on the first try. How cool is that. Thank you.

But the real question is ... where do you live that you have a Brooks saddle? I guess they are not well known outside Western Europe and the UK?

It's funny sometimes with products when they aren't easy to get in the USA.

Now that they are I'm surprised that we don't see them more.

They are a big hit in my opinion.

Wow! Didn't know they were sold all over the world!

They are very popular here (Netherlands), and of course in the UK as well.

Well first I'll comment on performance.

I'm not a reviewer and I load all my soaps very heavily and incorporate a ton of water very slowly.

This was my first use with this soap maker.

    I'm very impressed.

It was very protective and dense. Had plenty of slickness and glide.

The skin feel to me was what made this soap stand apart. I waited a bit before applying aftershave to see how my skin felt. My skin will get very tight if a soap is drying. I didn't have any of this. My skin felt great.

As to scent. I know this varies from person to person. The scent is Norwegian Spruce. I wasn't sure what to expect. In my mind I had the I just carried the Christmas tree in and have sap on my hands smell. But it's more complex than that. Refined I should say. I'm not a one of those guys that can pick out scents too well so to me it just smells good. It does have a dominate spruce scent tho.

Hope that rambling helped you out

This isn't true, at all. Vancouver is full of folks with Brooks saddles as they are regarded as one of the best saddles in the world for a reasonably affordable price.
I have two and they are wonderful. :)
