MAYhem 15th, 2016. Razor: Alumigoose Blade: DORCO Brush: Razorock 24mm 2 Band Finest Soap: Soap Commander Courage Post Shave Face Care: Maggard Alum Block/ Thayers Medicated Superhazel Aftershave Balm: Soap Commander Courage Aftershave Splash: Brut Late afternoon shave today. Was going to shave this morning but when I went outside to have a coffee and morning cigarette on the porch I noticed that some hornets were building a nest right outside my daughters window. Went back inside to let the wife know to say inside and don't come out at all until further notice (She is deathly allergic to bees, wasps, hornets, ECT). Went up to the store and grabbed about 6 cans of the nest killer spray that shoots up to 30 feet. I spray about 2 full cans on the tiny nest and noticed that "some hornets" meant a lot of them. I would say at least a good 30-50 just started dropping out. Got out the ladder and was able to knock the soaking wet nest down onto the ground. Start to climb back down the ladder and I feel something on hand. I look at my hand and sure enough a hornet was twitching on my hand. I go to slap it to finish it off and in a final last effort it musters the strength to fly into my face and stinging me on the eyelid before it just stopped moving and fell down off my face. I make it down the ladder and run inside to start rinsing off my eye and get a cold compress as my eye lid started swelling up. Not a great start to the day but at least I don't need to worry about my wife getting stung. Shortly after lunch I hopped in the shower after setting up my shaving gear. Even though my first run with the Dorco was a failed assassination attempt to the dismay of @NCoxSTL (He generously PIF'D me some blades for my CJB) I decided to give the Dorco another shot because...well what is the worst that could happen? Get out of the shower and start whipping up the SC Courage soap. Get a fairly decent load on the brush and as soon as I apply it to the face it explodes into a rich, creamy lather. It had looked like I didn't have a good enough load but I was wrong. Grab the Goose and pop in the Dorco. Start my first pass and realize the first stroke that me and this blade do not like each other. It tugs a lot and seems to struggle cutting through even the tiniest stubble yet decides it is sharp enough to bite me multiple times. The first pass is done and I still have a lot of stubble left.. I lather up for my second pass and go XTG. Still a lot of tugging but I am at least now getting some good beard reduction. On the XTG pass I only got bit on the upper lip area but I don't know if that was the blade just being a jerk or my angle with the Goose itself....I really dislike the Dorco so lets just blame him. I lather up for my 3rd pass and go ATG. I managed to get a somewhat kind of not really DFS on the cheeks and a SAS on the neck. The neck was by far the hardest and most uncomfortable part of this whole torture ritual shave. I managed to acquire quite the few cuts and a few weepers. Alum screamed as I applied it but the SC Courage Balm calmed the skin and almost all of irritation down. Finished off with some Brut and am off to research what grade of rusty tuna can lids Dorco uses for its blades. So there you have it.... I fought the Goose and got bit.... Are you all happy now?
I think your angle might be off. I have a really tough beard and the dorco was decent. It may have also been a bad batch of blades like Neal's Ladas tuck that hate him. I found it to be the same as the Kai or the feather blades. If you want tug and bloodflow than load in a Canadian Kamisori blade.
Sunday Shower/Shave Shower- Noxzema facial cleaner, Dr. Bronner's All-One Hemp Peppermint bar soap Brush- RazoRock Plissoft Razor- Muhle R41 on a Maggard MR5 handle Blade- Sputnik (1) Soap- TSD London for Men lanolin with M-Bomb Thayers Witch Hazel with grapefruit EO AS- TSD Neroli milk followed by Florida Water with M-Bomb A great Sunday shave today. The Sputnik blade was a new one for me but it worked great. Not quite as smooth as the Personna Red or Voskhod but close. Three passes and I'm BBS with zero irritation. This TSD soap is fantastic, I don't know why the lanolin makes such a big difference but for me it does. So far it's the best soap I've tried. The TSD AS milk is also fantastic, great feeling and scent. Does Russia product a bad blade? So far every one I've tried has been great. Have a great day folks!
Try a Gillette Rubie for the bad blade. Its not as bad as a Tiger or a Flying Eagle but it made Neal's top 10 worst blades.
Mystery May!!! Shave Den Sunday - 15 May 2016 www.theshavedenshop.com Have a wonderful Sunday Evening!
I've found only one bad Russian blade. The Gillette Rubie. However, I have heard from many who really like it. So, I suppose it's YMMV at work on that blade for me, or else I need to give it another shot just to make sure.
The blade I sent was out of the same bunch I used and I thought it was a decent blade. One dud in the bunch maybe? And I agree, the Kamisori is really the epitome of bad AC blades.
Sputnik is a good substitute when you don't have a better Russian blade. I call it the poor man's Voskhod. It's Teflon, but just not quite as good as its big brothers and cousins.
