    Today's Shave: Tuesday May 17, 2016

    Rocnel
1/2 Personna Super Lab Blue DE blade (1)
    The Grooming Co. synthetic brush
    Valobra Fougere hard soap
    Pinaud Lilac Vegetal

The Rocnel is a new all stainless steel single edge razor from Turkey that uses a DE blade broken in half. It is moderately aggressive, super-smooth and reminds me of the shave from a Shake Sharp (not surprising, since the Shake Sharp is another SE using DE blades). I'll post a detailed review over in the Rocnel thread after I get a few more shaves in, although an all stainless steel razor for under $40 including shipping to the US is already pretty impressive.

    It's pretty close JR.

I'd say it's a tad short of being as soft as a modern day synthetic. For a vintage nylon though, I'm pleasantly surprised about its face feel, and amazed at its water retention. Also surprised at how much backbone it has.

I bought it to test as a travel brush and it fits nicely into the tube that came with my vintage kitbag. I was a bit disappointed with the smallness of the handle, but have gotten comfortable with it especially in that the length of the knot is longer than expected which helps with the shave. I can easily get two passes of lather with it, which is all I ever need when shaving everyday. So I'm happy to sacrifice a bit of handle length to get more knot length.

It's a great little vintage travel brush.

Just finished a fantastic shave with my ESF Rapide and Rapide blade (2)

I dialed up the aggressiveness up a tad. There are some scribe lines as to where to set the blade. I moved the blade slightly forward of those. All I can say is WOW this was my best shave yet. Super smooth BBS everywhere. I have only achieved this good of shave one other time. That was with my injector.

i am also very impressed with the soap. It is super slick and easy to lather. The scent is a great added bonus.

    @Billyfergie
Tomorrow my new Damaskeene is suppose to make the scene...Please keep your fingers crossed that it is a brillient example of the breed.
There are also 7 original Damaskeene blades....I don't have honing gear or a stropper or stropping handle....it's going to be a bit before I can whip one of these into 'shave ready' shape. So I'll shave tomorrow with a new GEM blade...

So recommendations please.....carbon or stainless....and how many shims?

    Cold water 3.gif

    Prep: Warm shower
    Blade: Chinese Schick
    Razor: Schick G1 Injector
    Brush: Omega 10049 boar
    Lather: VDH Luxury scented
Post: Witch hazel splash, Fine American Blend, Nivea sensitive balm
    WTG, touch-up

Nice shave again this morning with this combination. New Chick blade felt nice and sharp, very smooth. The G1 went right through beautiful VDH lather compliments of the Omega boar brush. One big pass and touch-up around the neck and jaw and I'm satisfied and ready to go.

Fine American Blend is such a good scent! I only have a sample of it so have to use it a little sparingly. Really smells good.

Hope you all have a great day!

Using the G1 and GEM Featherweight this month has been eye opening. Like @Rusty blade I am grappling with the thoughts that perhaps SE razors are better for me than DE razors. I seem to get smoother and closer shaves with fewer passes with a single edge. That is a good thing because I never want to overshave and make my face raw from multiple passes day in and out. I stick to one pass with touch-up on weekdays and then two pass shaves on the weekends. I don't chase the baby. SE shaving has been more efficient.

I'm struggling with my razor faith here!! Many of you have been on the same path I bet.

Just give in to the fact that SE's are a better shave for you. It took me a month to come to that realization.

    Welcome to the SE

Fortunately I started with SEs so I didn't need to face that dilemma. However, I got an Old Ball End Gillette in a lot that needed a handle repair. I fixed the handle and have been telling myself that I will shave with it one day. Just to say I did. Then again, I did shave with DEs for a couple of years as a teenager but that was so long ago I don't think it counts. :happy102:
