Learning the Straight. this will be my Saturday shave for a while.

First pass with Straight and cleanup with my E2. Last 2 passes E2. I will only talk about the E2.

This is one smooth efficient razor. The last 2 passes left me DFS. super maneuverable razor. One gets tempted to speed shave with it.

    Have a great weekend

    Last nights shave.

    Razor- Gem Damaskeene
    Blade- Gem Duridium
Brush- Made Rite 1500 L Pure Badger
Lather- Kim Kelley Boutique Artisan made Barbershop scent shave soap
    Post- OSMA alum block
Aftershave- Genuine Ogallala Bay Rum Sage and Cedar

This little razor is becoming my goto razor. I can always count on a fantastic shave whenever I use the Gem Damaskeen . When I use the old stropping blades it give a close smooth shave, the new style Gem blades are almost the same results it just gives a great shave every time I use her. Sometimes I wonder why these razors were ever replaced by all the different types of razors you see now. I plan on keeping this style razor in my rotation. Between all my different 1912 razors and my injectors and the two straights I now have my DE razors very rarely see any use. I just love the using the SE anymore. Sometimes change is not a good thing IMHO.
    May the SE live forever.

Perry, here are a couple of tips that might help. Angle is very much a key to getting a good shave out of the Gem MMOC. Keeping the head close to flat really helps eliminate any "bites" from the blade. I have also found that this is one razor where "zero pressure" really means zero pressure. There's not many choices for blades, but I do like the Personna-Gem blades and find that they give me effortless and smooth shaves every time. I can do one pass with the Micromatic Open Comb and get somewhere between a DFS and BBS shave. There's a bit of a learning curve on this razor, but with a few uses, you will get great shaves in no time.

Thanks Jim! I hope to try it again today. I certainly think my angle was off yesterday. I needed more angle between my face and the handle. I was too shallow.

Thanks again. I'll report back after the next shave.

Once again inspired, by the Dean of the Injector and SE Party thread - @Bird Lives - I just got my hands on my 1st GEM Damaskeene!

I don't know much about these razors other than their reputation via comments on this thread - all great of course. I seemed to have nabbed a decent, user grade, OC version, which coincidently, I tend to lean towards, at least from an aesthetic perspective. Other design aspects on this one - no bevel on the head, inscribed "Gem Cutlery Co. New York, USA" and the unique inside inscription promoting Damaskeene blades.

Two-day growth, three-pass shave - WTG, XTG, ATG

First shave with this razor, was a unique experience. Louder than injectors and not as smooth. The blade angle appears to be narrow, with a flat "riding the cap" angle as they say in the DE world. It will take me awhile to get consistently dialed in on it, especially ATG on my chin, but I’m guessing it will be well worth the effort. This shave left me dolphin-smooth!

Thanks to all you hepcats for cluing me onto the Damas-Scene, Daddio!

    Cheers!

Well you are the Thread Master on this site Lloyd, when it comes to the Single Blade hardware. When did you start this thread - 100 years ago?!! :shocked003:

I don't know what it is about this type of shaving that promotes the "share the love" attitude, but it's been all around me since I joined TSD a year ago and won the Newbie Give-away a few weeks later. From blades to soap, aftershave to razors - no doubt this is a giving group...they even forward auction addresses when they catch wind of hot deals!

And what goes around comes around. You mention in your post above, all the shaving love that was shared from guys who were here when you first started. Well some of them come and go as I'm sure I will some day, but to pick up what you all started is what I see as my responsibility to pay it forward as well.

Thanks for being the Master Bartender here Mr.B :happy096:...now how about another round of menthol for all these guys!
    :eatdrink047:

and by the way, where can I pick up that groovy jazz CD. :git:
If I can't get out to one of your shows, at least I can groove on the freeway. I've got one of those ol'time cars with a stock CD player!

    Cheers!

Congrats! The Damaskeene razors sure are nice. I found mine about a year ago and get great shaves from it. According to what @Darkbulb told me last year, yours looks like to be a 1912 to 1915 build. Somewhere during or after 1919, they dropped "cutlery" from their name and the later razors just had Gem on the back. The open comb model that you have is fairly rare and I think was only made from 1912 to 1915, with the modified open comb continuing on.

    Enjoy it.

I just finished a meandering 2,000 mile road trip bringing my son and his stuff home from his college graduation. It was a great trip but it's one drawback was it took me away from the Wedge SEs for a week. So tonight I picked up the Nordic Beauty to attack the two day old beard I'd been saving. The blade was the less sharp one I have and I think it needs a refresh but the outcome was great. :happy036:

I tried out a sample of Sterling's Glacial Lemon Chill. It was cold and all but not for me. Glad samples are cheap. Any suggestions of favorites from Sterling fans for non-chill scents? :signs002:

One thing about the wedges - I'm not sure that I've ever gotten a weeper when using one but I got one every shave on the trip with my black handled, early type E2. Back on the wedge train... :transport022:

Well, I went looking for straight razors today and found a couple of beautiful Sheffield razors that were out of my price range. However, I did find this....
    image.jpeg

It's an E injector and the guarantee on the bottom of the case indicates it's from 1940. There are still blades in the injector. This baby is virtually unused based on its condition.

And it cleaned up like this...

    image.jpeg
I can't wait to try it out. By the way, the $5 G I bought over a week ago is hung up somewhere in Kearny NJ courtesy of the US mail.

The Date on the Case is Reference to the 1940/1941 Guarantee & not Necessary the Date of the Razor..These Cases were used with later Models as Well with the Same 1940/1941 Guarantee..:)

The Original Model that came in that Case was the Type E 2 with Circles Embossed on the Top Spring as far as I can Gather..The Type E s in Particular are Hard to Date..The Pre 1947 Ones had Schick Injector on the Spring..The Post 1947 Ones were all Made in Canada & had Eversharp Stamped on the Spring..Thats the Best I can Come up with..:)
