One pass shave today, partly for experimental purposes and partly because I was running out of time! I was under a time crunch and needed to shower and shave pretty quickly! Pretty decent shave for one pass. It would have been nice to clean up around the neck and jaw area some more, but that's okay. The MMOC is an interesting razor and I need some more time with it to realize its potential.

The TSD products behaved beautifully as always. I hope you all had a great weekend!

 

Nice write up. The MMOC is an interesting razor and has lots of potential. Hang in there with it. It will be one of your favorites.

 

Does anyone know why some of the older Schicks have a grainy surface finish. I think I've only seen E type razors with the rougher finish but I might be wrong. I just won an E2 that appears to be in good shape with the rougher finish. I'm just curious why some were really smooth while others were a bit rough. Does anyone know why?

 

Thanks Jim! I had a sense it was a different sort of duck with the open comb, which I am very fond of with my DEs.

It just blows my mind that I'm getting a great shave from a piece of craftsmanship over 100 years old!

Do you think that craftsmen way back then would have ever thought of the concept of "planned obsolescence?"

 

Well I just got in a schick G and I'm waiting on an Ever ready. I've never used a single edge before so I'm kind of hoping I don't like them ....all I need is Another reason to buy more razors

 

Well I tried my first shave with a Schick and a good blade a few weeks ago and now I have three Schicks and another on the way. Of course your experience may be different but ...this thread is on page 431 for a reason.

Rufus, you're a lucky man to have acquired that razor. Planned obsolescence would likely not have been understood back then.

It is very cool when you realize that a 100+ year old razor can give you as good a shave as anything made today.

I'm on a weekend getaway with my wife in an RV in the mountains. I grabbed this Ever-Ready Town set before leaving and it is making a fine travel razor. Shaving conditions are primitive but l've been enjoying some great shaves.

I'd been using modern SE's (Cobra, Mongoose, Rocnel) the past couple of weeks and it's fascinating rediscovering the 1914. I have to say that the last two days shaves have been as good as any I've had. The oft-mentioned initial harshness of the Gem stainless steel blade was not there at all.

It's enough to make me wonder why I even bother with modern razors.

But this was a very special session....the cats were all great players, and some are on many of the albums I listened to coming up, like "Bluetrane"... This session is very dear to my heart...

Those open combed Damaskeenes were the first and now the most rare....and many say, the best.....Congratulations Sir.....NOW you can chill your AD bones for a bit....and great find, my man.....

 

Yep! That 1914 is a real charmer....a solid Blast from the Past! Enjoy every stroke, you deserve it....

 

Well, I just had my first go with this razor and all I can say is "Wow"!

The razor is light weight and I got some audible feedback out of it. I used my Proraso red (yes, still trying to finish that tub) and a Maggards synthetic. What a smooth and close shave! I only needed one pass most places, with two passes on the chin and neck. It's very easy to shave around the nose with this razor. No nicks at all.

E types are aggressive? Nah! Efficient? Absolutely!

I think I might like this razor... really like it!

By any chance is it a Canadian? I have one that has an irregular surface and I've seen a few other Canadians that way. Then again, it could just be minor damage from a chemical cleaner. Of course, I keep hoping it is meant to be that way.

 

I'll be riding the G train too if the mailman ever delivers the one I bought 9 days ago.

The E train and the G train? This sounds like the NYC subway system here! I love it!
