I have been commissioned to do a few more lucite restores/recolors for a friend. Here's the progress so far... Waiting on knots now. Green will get a 23mm Ubersoft, Amber will get a 20mm TGN Finest Fan and pink will get a 20mm Silvertip from Whipped Dog
Wonderful! You have demystified the process. I assumed the clear handle was colored. It's the hole where the knot sits that has color on the inside. I'll keep my eyes open for scruffy lucite handles knowing I can restore them to handsome newness.
Thanks! It's a lot of work, but I'm really starting to enjoy lucite restores. They can be done, but they're time consuming and take patience and precision. Once you get the knot out, you have to sand, wet sand and then buff the inside to make sure it's as clear as possible. Any little blemish or scratch with show up as white once the paint in on. Also, the color isn't just paint. I actually use a paint epoxy combo. I add Testors enamel paint to a 2 part epoxy. This is my 4th-6th attempts at it. I'm no expert, but if you ever have questions or need advice, hit me up! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I assumed you painted the pocket, then glued in the knot. You are making a tinted colored epoxy! When setting the knot, you add the paint to the two part epoxy? Have any issues with the paint additive affecting the epoxy setting time or duration on holding power?
I do both. I "paint" the hole with the paint/epoxy mix, let it dry (and remeasure once it's hard to make sure I get the right size knot) and then add the paint to the epoxy to set it. When I apply the mix to the empty hole, I roll the handle in my fingers to make sure I get even coverage on the sides. Keep rolling until it the movement of the mix slows, then set it upright to give and even base. It may slow the hardening process slightly, but it hasn't been by much and doesn't seem to effect any performance. I use a 5 minute clear marine epoxy. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I have an Everready 600 that has a clear handle like that, i like the color in the handle, looks cool!
2 of the 3 knots came in! 20mm Finest Fan (TGN) for the amber color, 20mm Whipped Dog silvertip for the pink! I'm hoping to get them tonight (after I mow my yard... It's been 2 weeks of rain and I haven't been able to!) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Final knot came in! 22mm synthetic "sunrise" from Amack Shaving. A little silver Rub-n-Buff on the lettering and then I got them packaged up and ready to mail in the morning! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
