  1. Don't get me wrong please..... But this thread is looking like the SOTD.
  2. Tonight I shaved with a British ER 1912 with a Corrux stropping blade (3). I have been reading on other forums as to the difference of the British compared to the US made ones. The British are more aggressive.

Well I had 2 days worth to work with. The first pass was as good as any SE I have had to date.

The second pass was probably the best second pass of any of my SE shaves. Leaving me to really co sider a third pass. I could have stopped with a CCS.

So third pass was decided on. I was not disappointed. Finished with s great shave and no touchups needed.

I am not sure if it's the blade or the razor. As I find these stropping blades to be fantastic. So my next shave will be with a new style Gem Carbon blade. i will report back in a few days with my comparisons.

  3. Looking forward to that report Tom. My vintage stropping blades are waiting somewhat patiently for me to strop them and put them to use. I imagine the din of their grumble will grow a bit if your report comes back as I expect it might. :happy102:

  7. Another day and another bit of shave learning. I was really looking forward to today's shave. I had a freshly honed blade and a new paddle strop to use. I'd been using a dinky 2" Poor Man's Strop from Whipped Dog to learn with. It is perfect for that purpose but a multi-purpose modular paddle from Straight Razor Designs caught my eye. Nice and wide, stable, flat surface, easy to grip - a nice step up. So, what could go wrong?

The big lesson I am learning with the wedges is how important blade maintenance is - and how easy it is to go wrong doing that. I have been stropping my blades with the attachment from my Heljestrand. All along I noticed there was some play in it. It would rotate about 10 degrees for so rather than stay tight in the handle. It was a bit of a PITA but not a big deal. Or so I thought. :scared003:

After refreshing my favorite blade it had that nice edge to it that I could feel on my thumb. But, after stropping it it felt a bit dull. I carried on with the shave anyhow. Sure enough, it was tuggier than what it should have been. When stropping after the shave on the new paddle strop I could see I wasn't always making even contact as I was adjusting my grip to account for the movement of the attachment in the handle as a result of the play. Darn. The stropping was likely doing more harm than good. The good news is that I was able to make an adjustment to the attachment and it now fits nice and tight. I'll refresh the blades again for a future shave. If it doesn't go better next time I guess I'll find the culprit in the mirror. :happy102:

...and the new paddle strop. It has magnetic pads for different surfaces on both sides so that I can use felt with diamond spray for refreshes or use the scrub leather surface in addition to the smooth leather. I have an extra leather pad in case I manage to damage the first one. Hopefully I got most of my mistakes out with the Poor Man's Strop from Whipped Dog - it has it's share of nicks. :kar:

    Cold water 3.gif

    Prep: Warm shower
    Blade: GEM Stainless
    Razor: GEM Featherweight
Brush: Satin Tip 'The Purest' synthetic
    Lather: Williams Mug Soap
Post: Witch hazel splash, Mennen Skin Bracer, Nivea sensitive balm
    WTG, touch-up

Pretty good shave today with the GEM Featherweight and Williams Mug Soap. A little more burn from the Skin Bracer today than yesterday. But I'm pretty smooth with one pass and touch-up. The Williams performed pretty well again today.

I hope you all have a great day!

Focusing on my Schick Type L (L1 and L7) this month.

    Cool shower, cold water shave.
    Razor: 1965-80 Schick Type L7
    Blade: Schick (Dutch) (2)
    Brush: Stirling Kong synthetic
    Soap: Stirling Island Man, M-bombed
    Witch Hazel
    AS: Stirling Island Man

    One-day growth, one-pass shave - ATG
Near perfect shave again with this combo with just one pass! Second shave with the Dutch blade (Dog Danglies) and I really like this combo - racing around curves with these sporty pinstripes is breath-taking. (But don't attempt this while ATG - know your limits!)

As you can see by the photo, this was an NOS purchase. I was searching to try to find the elusive Dog Danglies, as I had first experienced a great shave from them as a PIF from @Hodge last November-ish.

Soon after, I stumbled upon an auction for the NOS package in the photo. Seems the Type L "Championship Edition" may have been a promotion for the 1976 Olympics.

Anyway...since the Dutch blades were part of the package (razor and blades made in Holland) I decided to purchase three. I use one and sent one to my son. The third one (pictured) will be my ‘in-case-of-fire’ solution if I run out of these blades and find myself desperate enough to break into the package. Seems it may be necessary some day as I can’t seem to find any of these blades at auction, which seems odd. (I’m sure it’s not like anyone would hoard these and keep others from enjoying them…or would they…):signs136:

    Cheers!

  13. LOL...

This one isn't going anywhere my friend. It was found and purchased by SWMBO on my birthday a few years ago. It's also my favorite SE.
