How did you like your shave with the 1912. Noisy suckers aren't they! What blade did you use?

Do tell about your re-plate. Inquiring minds want to know.

The Gem 1912 proved to be an interesting tool. Close shave with good audible feedback. Switched blade early on to test vintage vs new blade. New blade proved sharper. Developed a wheeper on chin but could be due to first use naïveté. Did a full 4 pass down, side-side, and up.
Smooth skin with a bit of burn on neck which was soon pacified with Thayers and Alum block.

    Hey Tom,
It came out decent. But not perfect. I opened the razor, and most likely lost some continuity on the inner piece with the patent numbers. That piece didn't plate as well as the rest.

The razor was bare brass, so it made the prep much easier. Polished what I could, ran it through the ultra sonic, clean with wax/grease remover and into the plating solution.

The fresh plate feels like it really glides on the skin

Here is Gem Junior Military Issue Kit..The Surplus War Stocks were Sold to the Public after the War...Whether there was a Civilian Version appears to be Unclear..The Gem 1912 we saw with the Black Handle appears to be a Frankenstein Razor to me..:)

Good morning guys. Awesome shave to start this early morning. Three easy breezy passes for a dolphin smooth finish, with Route 66 Lumberjack paving the way with it's amazing cushiony, slick lather. I'm loving the Fine L'Orange like there's no tomorrow. Have a great day friends.

The first pass was with the WILD comb, and the second pass was with no comb at all. Yes, you heard me. I decided that I would try the no comb approach. If you get the angle right, it works. I got the angle right. After a cold water rinse and alum block, I finished off with Thayers Rose Petal WH and then Pinaud Clubman After Shave. I am clean, smooth, and refreshed...

I took a break from the wedges today and picked up an F. I paired it with a Plus Platinum NOS blade which normally leaves me unimpressed. However, in the F it is a match made in heaven and the blade really shines. Everything about this shave was smooth, easy, and close. The F is such a classic that it never gets old. :happy036:

It also got me thinking about Vince's musing about how starting with the ease of injectors might affect one's shaving journey. After a few weeks of focusing almost exclusively on wedges the shave today felt incredibly simple. That doesn't mean there wasn't a learning curve when I first picked up an injector but it clearly was a shorter one. Certainly shorter than the GEM 1912 I began with and way shorter than the wedges I am in the process of learning. In my case, I think that was a good thing. If I'd started with straights or the wedges, for example, I wonder if I'd have gotten too frustrated to stick it out. I think having the earlier experience of some fantastic shaves with a GEM or Ever-ready and the injectors has given me the motivation to stick with the new challenges of wedges and straights that I am venturing into. Today's shave with the F was like a cool breeze on a hot day - refreshing, uplifting, and relaxing - and no effort required. Just the inspiration I needed. :happy005:

Today I had a shaving revelation. I've been told quite often that I am heavy handed. I work in a cast iron foundry on the molding line. We average 3000 molds in an 11 hour shift. Everything I do at work is done with my hands setting cores all day I have strong and big hands. @twhite mentioned a light feathery touch when using the type G injector. Today while prepping for my shave I was thinking about what he said. I decided to changer my grip on my type G injector today. Instead of holding the razor by the front and back of the handle I tried a grip on the sides of the handle so I couldn't put a lot of pressure on the razor it was kind of a pivot grip. It was different getting used to that grip but the end results were amazing. I had such a great shave I did a 4 pass shave. So smooth and no irritation. The grip will take so getting used to but it works great and no sting from the alum block today. BBS and squeaky clean. Loving the type G today.

    Today's Shave: Sunday June 12

    C. V. Heljestrand razor
    C. V. Heljestrand wedge blade, freshly honed
    Whipped Dog 24mm synthetic brush
Queen Charlotte Soaps Iced Key Lime
    Stirling Bay Lime aftershave

I took a break from my exploration of the Above The Tie SE1 - couldn't go the entire weekend without a wedge blade shave. I had stayed up late the previous evening honing up a fresh C. V. Heljestrand blade.

What? Doesn't everybody spend Saturday night honing wedge blades?

The C. V. Heljestrand and the SE1 are vastly different shaving experiences, but the result is the same - a super-close irritation-free BBS shave.

I've enjoyed reading about the SE1. I'm not drawn to buying new razors as the vintage ones offer so many great shaves but it sounds like the SE1 was "top of the charts" so to speak. And honing is in my near future. Saturday nights may be as good as any. :happy102:

Tonight was my first shave with MM clog proof.

I traded a Gillette Red Tip for it from @Jorvaljr today.

So I lathered up my trusty Hasslinger using my new JR brush. For my blade I used the Gem carbon steel blade (3). The angle on these MM's is easy to find. I just have the head sit flat on my face then lift up slightly.

This is a very smooth razor for me. The reduction is on par with the more aggressive razors I have.

I did notice today that I was taking longer strokes than normal. This did not seem to make any difference in shave quality. I did my standard three pass shave and a bit of touch up on my neck.

Just a personal observation on SE's and injectors. Prior to using these, I always had problems with under my jaw. Now that is not a problem 75% of the time. As I do not need to work those areas more. I do not get razor burn or any other irritation.

I am SE & injector for life

    Tom
