Razor: Gillette President w/case and blade pack. (Y1)(1953) Blade: Gillette GSB (4) Brush: DFS LE w/Envy White Soap: TSD Iced Irish Spring Type A/S: TSD Iced Irish Spring Type Gillette is one of my favorite Vintage Gillette razor. The DFS LE whipped up an excellent cooling lather, and the after shave provided a cool finish. Hope everyone is having a great Father's Day.
Home from several unpleasant places after quite some time deployed. A happy Father's Day to all including myself! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Father's day shave Prep: Musgo Real classic Razor: Maggard MRG Blade: Viking Sword (5th shave) Brush: Everready Badger-lon Soap: Shannons- Silk Pajamas Post: Peach Thayer's WH Balm: Reef Point Aviator 2 pass shave today. Received two Shannons soaps from a trade. Silk Pajamas and Black Magic, my dad immediately took Black Magic for a test drive. He liked it so much I let him have it, made a great Father's day present. Very good performance from the soap, it looks a lot like the vintage Palmolive green puck, the scent is light and not bad, but not a straight up Tobacco scent. Ingredient list is full of moisturizers and good stuff. It may be time to retire this blade, some tugging, but still ended up with a very nice shave. Finished off with peach Thayer's and Aviator balm. Happy Father's day everyone!
I find it to be hit and miss and the local Walgreens. Some have it, others have the VdH Luxury. So, you just need to check around.

Jolly Good June! June 19 Razor - Gold Dollar 800 Soap - MWF Brush - Vie Long 12601 The Pony Post - Cold rinse, Alum, Nivea, The Veg Had an extra cup of coffee this morning since Sunday is a noon start for me at work. So, I was a little more awake than normal so I was ready to shave and have a great one. And, fortunately, I did just that. The GD800 is well under my control at this point (well until it now bites me for saying that) and with the Fat lathered off of the Pony it was a great feeling process throughout. No nicks, cuts, problems, errors, or anything else. Alum amazingly quiet. I think I'm getting the hang of these straight razors. I will admit I love the process except for the stropping. I seem to be doing fine with it, I just don't really enjoy the process. I know, it should be more meditation time for me. I'm working on it. Hope you all had a great day today! I'm finally on the weekend so it's getting better by the minute here!
Also check local grocers. I buy mine from my local food Lion grocery store. I love VDH Deluxe, too. It gets some knocks because it is usually what people think of as a beginner soap, it's inexpensive, glycerin based and fairly common. But I could shave with it the rest of my life if that was all I had, and really enjoy my shaves.
I agree with you. It's an amazing soap that works very well for me. If it was all I had for the rest of my life, I would be fine with that.
We've been having a discussion along these lines on the 30 day thread. The whole....."if it costs more it has to be superior" attitude and idea. While I really love my MWF and Tabac, and even my Proraso, I'm with you. VDH Deluxe would work perfectly. I've never tried the other VDH soaps, but have heard similar about them too. It's kind of like Arko. Gets a bad rap but it is one of the best lathering soaps out there. And slick. Yes, it's cheap...that's just a bonus.
Around here, the way that Walgreens stocks the shaving section seems to have no rhyme or reason. Some stock the VdH Deluxe, others stock the Luxury. A few stock the VdH blades, but not all. Even fewer stock the Gillette Platinum Plus and, oddly enough, the closest one to my house is the one that stocks the VdH Deluxe. To make matters even stranger, there appears to be some variance of pricing between all of them. I suppose it makes sense to someone in Corporate, but seems odd to me. BTW, if you go to the page for the Deluxe soap on Walgreens.com (http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/van-der-hagen-deluxe-shave-soap/ID=prod1898-product), you can search for a local store that has it.
