I have been into DE shaving for about 3 months now. It has been difficult because in my country it's not popular to use DE razors for daily shaving. You can get a nice shavette shave at a barber shop but that's about it. After using a shavette for my personal shavings I found it to be a close shave but it took too long and would get irritation. After watching YouTube I found DE wet shaving and could not find any DE razors in the country, I had to order a Merkur 33c online, I've used it and been shaving with canned foam, but I want to try soap and brush. I did find a very cheap brush not even sure if it's too small for face lathering buts it's all I could find locally, no shaving soaps either. I did read some of you use regular soap, so I bought A bar of Johnson baby soap, in my logic it contains glycerine donut should make some lather and its formulated for babies do it should not dry my skin. So have any of you used baby soap for shaving? What are your thoughts please.
Welcome aboard. I have shaved with tons of different bar soap. Make do with what you have for now, right? There is plenty of slickness to be found in a regular bath bar. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Honestly I would recommend you place an order for a 1kg block of cella. It should last you a couple years and is a great shaving soap. 100 de blades will last the same time. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Welcome @Frankrw ! There are many shaving soaps available through the internet. While you can't smell the scent or feel the lather - keep your eyes open. If you see folks talk about any that sound interesting, just ask. Plenty of opinions, lots of advice, even actual information will arrive quickly!
Thank you for your input, the reason I ask about baby soap is that ordering online costs a lot to import to my country, that is why I am searching for a local alternative.
You certainly can shave with bar soaps, but make sure it is "soap" and not "detergent." Plenty of soaps aren't really soap at all. Since you got the merkur online, I would guess it would be just as easy (if not easier, due to customs) to get shave soap online as well. I would recommend doing this. There are some good but low-priced options such as arko, proraso, and cella. You can certainly also get finer shave soaps as well if you desire. I tend to like soaps more than creams, and they last longer too. Depending on how often you shave, you could reasonably get 2 or 3 shave soap pucks and they would last you quite some time.
No, but simply because I have too many shaving soaps, I like their scents, and I'm simply getting great shaves with them. If I wouldn't be able to get shaving soaps or I simply wouldn't get good shaves out of them, I would definitely try shampoo, bar soaps, whatever. I use bar soap for shaving my armpits and the back of my neck, so they might work on face just as good. Whatever works for you is good. If you are not getting good results, I'm sure that you can find some shaving cream around. I found out that shaving cream is pretty common in most countries. In mine, Romania, we don't really have shaving soaps in the convenience stores, but we find at least 3-4 types of shaving cream tubes. It works just as good as soaps, some types even better than most expensive soaps that I own.
I have used Dove bath soap on occasion when traveling and works better than most bar soaps BUT what Mikewood said, a kilo of Cella soap is fantastic, I've been using mine for well over 2 years and gives a great lather.
I have never tried baby soap, but have used Dove bar soap. The Dove worked pretty well as a shaving soap.
This week I went out on a trip with the family, I just packed my razor and the brush. The next morning at the hotel I shaved with one of those tiny hotel X brand soaps and it actually did a better job than the time I tried baby soap, the lather was thicker and I did not get any cuts.
