The word "smoke" has become used in many ways of late(and maybe it always has been):

A pitcher SMOKES the fastball by the batter
A batter SMOKES a line drive past the infield
A hockey forward SMOKES past the defenseman to score a goal
The winning team SMOKED the losing team 15-2.
Secretariat SMOKED the rest of the field at the 1973 Belmont Stakes.

Oh yeah, I forgot-the person SMOKES the cigarette(pipe, cigar).

 

You can also smoke a turkey.

 

ah yes.....forgot the food equation of the thing.

 

And let's remember that SMOKE is also a noun.

 

That's the way I was always taught. People must have played around with that noun until they could find some "fancy" usage for it. Hey, speaking of "usage"....I read in one of those word trickery books that in various places around the world, it is pronounced "YOWZITCH". What is realized is that it does SOUND a bit like "usage", yet the letters are entirely different than those of the regular word.

I still can't figure out which is supposed to be the second most offensive word in English. Is it "jive" or "penguin".

 

well, we all know that it cannot be penguin.

 

That's what's good about being a fox, if you google "jive fox" you get a lot of pics of Samantha Fox. If you google "jive penguin" you get, well, you know...

 

And if you search Jive Talkin' you get the Bee Gees.

 

I would rather be correct than making 'tolerated mistakes'. Besides. Grammar is really easier than/when you think.
