I like the vanilla, but i find there are better "sweet" aftershaves. Pound for pound, dollar for dollar...i feel the original stacks up against any aftershave. The fact that it is cheap, lasts a long time, smells great, and is easy to find puts it amongst my favorites.
Mennen Skin-Bracer, Clubman, Aqua Velva Musk, and I now want to get introduced to tobacco and leather. Also want to get on the Stirling bandwagon.
oh, you say the C-man Vanilla is too sweet? And I'd agree with you on the Original. I'm glad local drugstores have it.
No aqua velva ice blue? Stirling is fantastic. I am going after some musgo real, floid blue, and fine platinum. My current go-to's are pinaud clubman and lilac vegetal, florida water, truefitt and hill trafalgar balm, aqua velva, proraso white line balm, stirling margaritas in the artic, and sometimes old spice.
This is one of my favorite splashes. But like any weapon, you want to wait for the right time to bring it out.
I brought mine out today after a SOTD with truefitt and hill 1805 (one of my absolute favorite soaps).
I had to age into the Avon's I now like; Wild Country, Oland, Leather, Bravo, & Deep Woods. I think folks who were gifted Island Lime enjoyed it right then. I only discovered Pinaud products in the last year of wet shaving. I never used AS's during my cart & canned goo decades. My Lady Friend gifted me Canoe, so I already had a Barber Shop similar to Clubman.
Wellll....yes, I like the Aqua Velva Ice Blue, but..the fact that it originated as a mouthwash upsets me.
Special reserve is one of my favourite aftershaves. I like every club scent I have tried, but this is my favourite of them all. A great manly scent. Sent from my LG-V480 using Tapatalk
I don't think picking one over the other is the best idea....I like mixing a splash of this and a dash of that... I personally don't think anything can beat the Original Clubman...BUT! a palm full of Clubman and a healthy dash of Special Reserve is great! It adds a little more complexity with the Leather dimension... And along those lines, I agree with those that have said that The Special Reserve has one of the best ever Leather scents available...I think it has a more authentic leather scent than colognes that cost 15 to 20X's as much... I used a palm of Clubman Original with a good dash of Special Reserve and splashed...then followed with a small splash of Aqua Velva Musk....Got more compliments than any aftershave I have ever worn....Warning!!! To Married Men....If you try this combination, you might want to carry straight pins in your mouth to keep unknown women from kissing you.... The Clubmans and AV Musk all layer very well together to make various AS Cocktails....Try it....You will not regret it.......and the expense is so low...I would say though, that the Original Clubman and Vanilla, and Special Reserve are all great places to start, along with AV Musk....But then if you have any favorite Clubmans, go for it...This is all very subjective...
A year ago I hadn't used shave soap. I've since experimented with UberLathers. I did try Osage Rub followed by Florida Water. That worked for me, but I don't have a SWMBO to veto my choices. That's good news for those of us that can't afford Top Shelf products.
I'm there with ya. Most of mine purchased locally; Drug stores, Beauty Supply shops, and for vintage Avon - flea markets & antique stores.
I just bought and tried some Special Reserve today. It sure is strong. I'm going to have to try it a few more times, before I decide if I like it, or not.
I always wait till late fall at the earliest to get my Clubmen in gear(Aftershave, shampoo, hair gel).
Have you tried the Musgo Real before? I like the scent, but there's something in it that makes my face feel sticky. Floid Blue is my favorite, and I have obtained (hoarded) 6 bottles of which I have used 3/4 of one bottle. It's getting harder to come by. I ordered the last one from Slovenia.
