I think that most woody scents are mild. Thats not necessarily bad, just what ive found.

    Schick L-1
    Personna Stainless
    CWR, Asma Alum Block
    T.N. Dickinson's WH
    Pinaud Vegetal

The TSD Iced Lime Shave Soap face-lathered well with my Jayaruh #100 two-band badger brush (I'm loving this brush). Two passes and touch ups with the Schick L-1 razor with a Personna Stainless blade gave me a close, comfortable shave. After a cold water rinse and alum block, I finished off with T.N. Dickinson's WH and then Pinaud Vegetal After Shave. I am clean, smooth, and refreshed...

    Wholly Kaw - Beta Scent #43 v3.0
    Rubberset 200-4 | Omega boar
    RazoRock Black Mamba | Gillette 7 O'clock Black (1)
    Barrister and Mann - Adagio

Over the past couple weeks, I've been privileged with the opportunity to participate in beta testing Wholly Kaw's latest creation currently known only as "scent #43". I've had this opportunity with WK before, and it should be noted that by the time their product is in beta testing, it's pretty close to being a final product. After going through 3 iterations, each one having been tweaked after feedback, I'm told this one is final. I wouldn't change a thing about this scent. This is, however, quite a departure from Wholly Kaw's other offerings. I detect no powder, floral, or soapiness. It's a quite bold but elegant. My initial impressions are of well worn, oiled, slightly smoky leather. It reminded me of a favorite cowhide belt worn slick by denim, and it holds that fragrance throughout the shave and for some time thereafter.

While I was essentially asked to provide feedback and critique on the scent, I would be remiss not to mention the performance. In my past experience, Wholly Kaw has been strictly a vegan soap maker, and they do this well. I was surprised to discover that this tallow base has been in use since Spring. I note a remarkable improvement in density and creaminess, and the slickness is on par with my other tallow soaps--superb. It paired well with the Black Mamba permitting me to take long sweeping final passes on my head resulting in a very pleasant 2-pass+ BBS shave. I look forward to purchasing this soap when it's available. As of this writing, it doesn't have a formal name.

I'm told there will be a matching splash, but for tonight I finished with Barrister and Mann's Adagio for no other reason than it caught my eye on the shelf, and you just can't go wrong with it.

    Grand Blade Trial
    Razor - 1962 (H1) Gillette Slim (2)
    Blade - [IMG] (1)
    Soap - Arko
    Brush - Semogue 620
    Post - Alum, The Veg

Welcome to SEptember!! And one filled with all the goodness of the old time after shaves. Here in STL today it even turned into a nice pre-fall day with highs around 80, a nice breeze and promises of many nice fall days to come.

My day started with a new blade on trial, the Personna Platinum - better known to shaving enthusiasts as the Israeli Red. Made by Personna in their Israeli plant it is a legendary blade alongside Feather, Voskhod and others. Vaunted for its incredible sharpness and smoothness it is the primary choice for many, and, for me, today was the first of three days I will spend with it. It's the Red version of the Personna Lab Blue.

After determining that the Royal Stainless Super, also from Personna Israel, is indeed a very fine blade I decided to put this one next in line for a direct comparison. And, my first thought as I started the first pass (other than wondering how a brush can actually make that much lather while spraying it all over the room at the same time) was a sever disappointment. I had expected shave nirvana. What I got was a fairly rough and ineffective first pass. Seriously? A blade as sharp as its advertised should have no trouble handling a Slim on 2. This one, however, did. It wasn't so rough that it was uncomfortable, really, just annoying. Second pass produced the same and the third pass was a serious ATG with a very aggressive Gillette Slide trying to get the neck to DFS. Alas, it didn't make it. A nice high level CCS, but no DFS today.

I should mention that I actually changed blades prior to the third pass to make sure I didn't have a dud. Nope, no dud. Just how they both performed. So, I'm left waiting until tomorrow to see what a higher setting will do. For being considered by so many a really sharp blade it performed more like a Derby. We'll see what it does tomorrow on 6. Right now, the Royal has it beat.

Hope you all are making some great plans for Labor Day weekend. Mine are to work 12 hours a day slinging springs. My usual holiday setting. Happy SEptember to you all!

I believe someone has called this Razor a "Schick Buster ", well when fitted with a modern Japanese blade it seems that way. There was an audible sound as the whiskers were being shorn. The Shave was very quick and efficient, with a nice close all round finish. Worth trying this razor out if you can get hold of one, I am using one as a Travel Razor for
    trips away from home.
