J.A. Henckels Rapide| Schick I2 Hydromagic (On standby)
    Arko
    24mm Stirling Synthetic

Good Morning friends. Yesterday I decided to take my Rapide (this is the one that was professionally honed) blade and see if I could give it a little more pizazz. I gave it 10 laps on the Crox and then 10 laps on the Irox and then somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 laps on the strop. It felt much much sharper. My WTG the grain pass was still tuggy and I played with the angles a bit finding out that for the most comfortable angle was with the retaining clip of the razor actually touching my face. The tugging wasn't horrible , except on my mustache and chin areas where my beard is the coarsest. I did get good reduction though so I decided to continue. The second pass XTG was much smoother. Third pass diagonal ATG left me with a nice DFS. The alum was a little warm in a few areas, especially on my chin where I probably subconsciously added additional pressure to compensate for the tugging. Now that we are in the ball park I would still like to have less tugging from the blade but also I have something to compare my hand honed blade to. Hopefully it only gets better from here. Fortunately/Unfortunately my Schick I2 didn't get any play today but did make a cameo appearance in my SOTD photo. Have a great day friends!

I2 Hydro-magic +(trimmed) Feather AC Pro. Because it works. Really, really well. Wasn't at all difficult inserting the blade on the left side with the key in the right. No need to hack the I2. Smooooth.

Thanks Jim. Sorta looks like they go together. I hadn't noticed the color similarity. StrongSet brush with a Whipped Dog Black badger knot and a Captain's Choice 'Magma' bowl.

    Blade- GEM
    Soap- Route 66 Barbershop Hop
    Post Care- Crystal Alum
    Thayers Witch Hazel
    Stirling Barbershop

I shaved about 8 hours ago but I didn't have a winner from today's shave until now. This was a redemption shave since my last was less than desirable. First, the Route 66 is a dream to use, fantastic lather, protection and scent. First pass I have to say the GEM was more comfortable on my left side but the Ever-Ready shaved closer on the right. Second pass went to the Ever-Ready. By the end of the third pass I was dolphin smooth. The winner was to be decided by the alum however...complete silence on both sides. Eight hours later I am still BBS on the Ever-Ready side, slight growth in the GEM side. The Ever-Ready shaved deeper than the GEM so I have to give it the win. We'll switch sides Friday to determine a winner for this round. Have a great day folks!

5th and maybe the last shave with the 1912 Gem this month.
I have three other SEs to get to with a possible “shave off” at the end of the month between my faves.

    09-07-16.JPG

1-day growth, 2-pass shave (WTG, ATG)
    GEM PFTE blade (5).

Today was a Good Shave (3 out of 5 stars) with this combo. That’s about the CCS level. I’ve had two shaves like this and two shaves that were sub-par (2-star). Fortunately I had one at the 5-star level (BBS). This indicates that I am capable of using this tool well, but I’m not consistent.

I’ve not met too many razors like this one, that IMHO require keen focus on both technique and tools.

My technique to perform around the chin area with this razor could probably use a month-long focus as I found it rough nearly every time. (I may find the time for that somewhere in my distant future, but for now I’m still in the “so many razors, so few shaves” stage of my development.)

I will never blame my tools for a bad shave (unless I get a bum blade out of the box or a damaged razor) but to me at this point, this razor is the first that I have met that depends so much on a smooth sharp blade and a certain “glide-focused” lather. My only 5-star shave came when my lather prep was perfect to provide enough glide when going ATG on my prominent chin where the effort was smooth. That coincided with the third shave on the blade - right after the “face-stropping” of the previous two shaves that seemed necessary to “smooth out” the blade.

Yet my only dilemma is that I could not replicate that third shave on the two shaves following it.

Hence my desire to revisit this combo in-depth in the future. (I hate when I come upon a tool that I cannot get consistently good shaves.)

But as the wiseguy New Yorker once told me as I was wandering the streets of NYC and asked him - “How do I get to Carnegie Hall?”
He smiled deviously, and wryly said - "Practice my friend, lots and lots of practice.”

    Cheers!

I put aside the g bar (aka Heavy Flat Top) this morning and used my curved top Gem Damaskeene. I love the close smooth shaves I get out of this razor! I can't stop touching my face in admiration of how well it did!

A most excellent shave this morning with the PAL Adj.. This KMF shave cream is just marvelous, my shaves are just better with this stuff. The protective coverage it offers is simply outstanding. Three easy refreshing passes for a dolphin smooth finish. Have a great day friends. :)

    Brush: Artisan badger
    Lather: Mama Bear Joop Type
Post: Witch hazel splash, Barbasol Pacific Rush, Nivea sensitive balm

Really nice shave this morning with Mama Bear's Joop Type soap and the Schick G1. First use with Mama Bear's and it performed very well. It wasn't as slick or cushioning as some soaps I own but provided a good shave regardless.

    Have a great day!

Unlike my I2, the G3 was too tight to slide in a trimmed Feather AC, so I settled for a 65 year old PAL blade which I usually relegate to empty razor loading only. Surprisingly still got a BBS shave, albeit with more work (I'm guessing) than the Feather would have been.

Fat Friday! Nice shave with the G1 and Mitchell's. Easy, bountiful lather from the Omega boar brush. One pass with touch-up and I'm pretty smooth. I love Fine American Blend and am planning to permanently link it to Mitchell's and Fat Friday.

    Have a great day!
