Yesterday I honed up my Darwin and today was the maiden voyage. When I tell my shave was close, I mean one of the closest shaves ever. After 2 passes I was pretty much done but I went ahead had a third pass and that put the final polish on. Wow! The blade sort of sings / rings as it is cutting. I'm going to work on it some more as I would like to see if it can be a little smoother and my technique needs a little work but overall I'm very pleased with it.

    Today's Shave: Sunday September 25, 2016

    Darwin Hollow Ground Safety Razor
Darwin blade (2nd shave since honing)
    Whipped Dog 24mm synthetic brush
    Yeti Snot soap
Cold Spice aftershave (Old Spice w/added menthol)

I enjoyed yesterday's shave with the Darwin so much that I decided to stick with it for another day (maybe more). I had reconditioned the strop in the case with neatsfoot oil and I used it to prepare the blade for today's shave, giving it about 20 laps.

Like the Rolls it is important to use a two stage stroke - pull (or push) briskly but pause just before the blade flips over and go slowly until the blade makes contact with the strop. Otherwise the blade will slap against the strop when it flips over, possibly damaging the edge.

The strop seemed to work well - today's shave was even smoother than yesterday's (and yesterday's was pretty good). Again, there was not a hint of irritation and no weepers. This is one smooth shaving system.

Here is a an ad for the Darwin, courtesy of Waits:

Note the "longer stropping and honing stroke than any other equipment." - an obvious reference to the Rolls.

Very cool Bob! And again a wierd coincidence. Today I put my reconditioned strop back together after cleaning all the old paste and whatnot from the leather with saddle soap. Then I applied red paste to one side and black to the other and worked it in real well. Cleaned the whole inside of the case and stropping mechanism and gave a final polish to the outside of the case. I ran the blade I sharpened yesterday a few laps on the strop then stored it in the extra blade clip. I have another blade to hone this week. I really enjoyed the first shave and even though it was my first shot at sharpening on of these blades and the first time shaveing with this razor it was an excellent job. I'm still BBS 6 hours later! :eatdrink047:

I think it's just like the Rolls just a different design or different in that the Rolls has a hone and the Darwin has 2 strops with different treatments. Also I think the "guard" and the adjustment on the Darwin is a wash as you still have a bare blade on your face. It's nice kit and if the strop will maintain the blade then :happy088:

I Don't use a Guard Bar on the Rolls..I use it Like an SR..I Also Don't use the Rolls System to Maintain a Blade..I Hone & Strop it Outwith the System for All its a Great System I get Better Results without Using it..:)

I just want to see if it works like back in the day. I know that the guy who owned my first Rolls wore that sucker out. Either he was getting good shaves or didn't know better. I'm thinking the former because the wear on the blade and hone must have taken years. So having said all that this is why I'm trying to get the whole system working.

Yeah..I Tell You Somthin for What its Worth..I have Had All Sorts of SRs Honed on Caveman Stones & I Can Blow the Hone Jobs Out the Water with Lapping Film..I Use Naniwa Super Stones as Well...Synthetic the Same as Lapping Film...Great Stones as I Hone a Number of Blades these Days for Folks...Naniwa Synthetic Stones are Faster Cutters but the End Result is Similar to Lapping Film..:D

The Only SR that I have Shaved with that was as Superb an Edge as Synthetic Hones was from a Japanese Vendor I Use..He Honed an SR Especially for Me on his Best Japanese Natural Stones & it was Smoother than Synthetics ..:)

But Hey..He Sells them for Thousands Upon Thousands..:angelic007:
