I have a Le Coq blade as well but its going to take some work to even get it ready to hone. It has some rust and discoloration on the blade that needs to be sanded out as well as a frown that needs to be fixed.

Those French Steel Blades are Even Harder Steel than Swedish Steel..Trust Me..Some French Steel is the Hardest Steel I have Ever Put on the Hone..Once You Get into Honing its Neither here Nor there but these French Steel Blades again are not Hone Friendly to the Beginner..:)

Well there goes that idea. How bout the Rolls blade ? Is that super hard steel as well ?

The Rolls Blade is Softer Sheffield Steel..A Lot Softer..It Cuts a Lot Faster & Far Quicker to Hone..That Said..There is No Short Cuts as You Either Know What You are looking for or You Don't..People Never Listen..Get One Honed by a Person that Knows What they are Doing..I have Said this 100 Times So I have..:D

I had one professionally honed, but the results were not satisfactory. I have faith that Glenn can get the job done though

I wholeheartedly agree. Shaving with one of these blades, even one that is perfectly honed, is a very different experience from shaving with a spined blade. Without knowing what a properly honed blade is supposed to feel like, you are shooting in the dark.

My own experience is that Rolls and Darwin blades are the easiest, the Kampfe Bros. blades are next (although these are inconsistent), then the C. V. Heljestrand, Rapide, and French blades. The Wilkinson Empire blades are the worst, due to their diminutive size and the fact that they were not designed to be honed at all by the user.

Setting the bevel is everything. Without a properly set bevel, everything that follows is just a waste of time.

When you finally get one dialed in just right you know it immediately with the very first stroke.

And that, my friends, is a truly awesome feeling! :happy108:

    Today's Shave: Monday September 26, 2016

    Valet Auto-Strop VC1
    Feather FHS blade (1)
    Whipped Dog 24mm synthetic brush
    Chiseled Face Groomatorium Cryogen soap
    Pinaud Clubman aftershave

Today's choice of razor was motivated by a thread in one of the forums (imagine that . . . ). I don't use an Auto-Strop very often, and when I do I usually reach for my VB1. However, I had this VC1 out in order to look at it, and figured, why not? I was too lazy to modify a Gem blade, so I loaded it up with a Feather FHS. A lot of people don't like these blades, but my only complaint is that I only get two decent shaves per blade.

While the VB1 is one of the most aggressive razors I own, the VC1 is quite moderate - think 1912. It makes a nice package in its little "coffin case."

The shave was smooth, irritation free and surprisingly close - mostly BBS, except for a couple of my usual trouble spots.

The reason the VB1 is so much more aggressive becomes apparent when the razors are compared (VB1 on the right, above). As can be seen, the blade gap on the VB1 is much larger than the VC1. In addition, the VB1 is considerably heavier.

Most of the changes from the VB1 to VC1 were likely done in order to reduce production costs, but the VC1 is still a smooth shaver that doesn't get enough love.

I haven't tried any of those newfangled SEs that the kids are all over these days.. But The General is in the mail and the E2 is the razor it's gonna have to beat as my vote for Desert Island Razor*. Haven't yet mastered it as a head shaver though, my decidedly newby technique with the E2/Feather on the head zone this morning resulted in a couple of nicks, whereas I never have any problems in Beardland. Will keep at it.

Received my Personna Gem blades today and decided to go for my first Gem razor shave. I decided on my Gold Push Button and glad I did. It was a toss up between that and the Featherweight, but the Push Button felt better with the extra weight. I started out by keeping the head flush against my skin, but it didn't seem to take off much of the beard, and soon changed that. I kept the head off my face and finally got the right angle, then realized that was the way to go, at least for me. I was rewarded with a great three pass BBS shave and loved it. IMG_0767.jpg

So I have been lurking around this thread for quite some time now, learning, and have started playing around with some injectors. I'm not yet getting quite the quality of shaves that I get with my favorite DE's, but it is a lot of fun. Here is my first shave with a G, that I got in the mail yesterday. It turned out DFS+ ish, but I was a little hard on my lower neck, and had to follow up with a little balm after my splash. I have a tendency to maybe use a little too much pressure with these.

It took me a couple of times to get it right, but what fine shaves that G will produce.

Great to see you here Jared. Very light pressure with the injectors. Try to find a PAL Injecto-Matic, PAL Adjustable or Schick N1 or Schick Adjustable. Thank me later! :happy088:
