They are very zippy when you get the hang of them brother. As maneuverable as a cartridge except they actually shave great. :)

    Today's (okay, actually yesterday's) Shave: OCtober 2, 2016

1901 Kampfe Bros. Star Lather Catcher
Kampfe Bros. wedge blade (freshly honed)
    Whipped Dog 24mm synthetic brush
    Stirling Electric Sheep soap
    Pinaud Clubman aftershave

The Star 1901 is very similar to the much more common 1902 except for the adjustable side holders and the much smaller blade stops. I think that these blade "stops" were actually intended only as a reference point, since the side holders actually position the blade. My razor has almost no brassing and the paint on the litho tin is in really amazing condition.

It came with a blade that I had never gotten around to honing - until last night. I've found the Kampfe Bros blades to be somewhat inconsistant, but this one honed up just fine, resulting in a really nice smooth close shave.

With my recent focus on Rapides and French Hoes I had forgotten what fine shavers these early Stars can be.

Wonderful shave this morning with the Schick N1 fitted with a twin blade. Creamy, protective lather with excellent glide from the Palmolive shave cream. Three passes for a refreshing dolphin smooth finish. Have a great day guys. :)

    Blade
    : Chinese Schick
    Razor: Schick L1 injector
Brush: Satin Tip 'The Purest' synthetic
    Lather: Stirling Barbershop
Post: Witch hazel splash, Stirling Barbershop aftershave, Nivea sensitive balm
    WTG, touch-up

This shave started off rough. I put in a new Chick blade last night and it must have either been a dud or I ran the edge across the stops because it was quite uncomfortable. So I quickly swapped it out for another blade with better results. I had two days of growth. First pass reduction wasn't so good so I had to do generous touch-ups to get a decent shave. I may used a tad too much water today in lather building as it was a little thin.

First use with Stirling aftershave. Nice stuff! Silky feel on your skin and good scent. Have a great day!

I would love to add Stirling aftershave to my den, but it's $12.75 for a 100ml. Perry, keep us posted on your thoughts on it.

    October 3, 2016- SEptember Epilogue

    Razor: Gem 1912
    Blade: Gem SS (1)
    Brush: VdH Boar
    Soap: Williams

Third day of the month and already I'm take a diversion from my focus, although this was a planned one. Last week, I won a PIF for a 1912 over on another forum and it arrived on Saturday. I didn't shave yesterday, so this was my first chance to try it out.

Back in the '70s, when I was first starting to shave, I seem to recall that I shaved a few times with a Gem (probably a Micromatic) that I had picked up at a flea market. I think I liked the results from the Gem, but all I seem to remember is the blades (which came in a green dispenser) rusting at the drop of a hat. Needless to say, I'm older and a bit wiser on blade materials than I was then.

Today's blade is a Gem by Personna SS blade purchased at the local Shop-Rite. I'm not sure if this is normal for other areas, but around here the chain stores tend to carry the Gem SS blades while the local, independent drug stores carry the Gem Blue Star (carbon steel, right?) blades.

I was a bit worried about finding the right angle, but that was definitely not a problem. Lots of audio feedback, as well. The small handle makes for an interesting experience, though; I had a moment where I felt like I was using a razor from a more genteel time.

The result- probably the closest I've ever come to a BBS and no special steps in trying. A little low-level complaint from the Alum, but more to remind me just how close this shave was. I'm just in awe at the moment and can tell I'll probably need to resist a new round of RAD.

It's been over three hours since application and the scent is still prevalent. I didn't use very much either. It has dried down to an Old Spice type scent, but with more vanilla notes. I'm TERRIBLE at describing scents though, so take all of that with a grain of salt! Looks like a little goes a long way.

@ob1page and @Paul Turner - You guys both use this aftershave. Your thoughts?

Started off with intention of trying a PAL Adjustable with a Schick /Krona blade as last one may have been a dud. Instead picked up a B1 and used that !

    Today's Shave: Monday OCtober 3, 2016

1901 Gem "New Gem" Lather Catcher
    Kampfe Bros. wedge blade
    Whipped Dog 24mm synthetic brush
    Haslinger Schafmilch soap
    Old Spice aftershave (w/added menthol)

The Gem Cutlery Co. was founded in 1898 by Jeremiah Reichard, a former employee of Kampfe Brothers. The Kampfe Bros. influence is obvious in the early Gem razors such as this one. Apparently the early Gems were not as popular as the Star razors, as they don't turn up nearly as often.

This one has an oversize wooden handle which suggests that it might have originally been part of a boxed set that included a strop and a stropping tool with a matching handle. These sets sold for $6.50 in 1901, which would be around $175 in today's dollars.

While the appearance is quite similar to the Star razors, the function is different.

The New Gem is hinged at the front below the guard and the back is split with a spring latch. The blade side holders are spring loaded and can also be swung back for cleaning. There are small blade stops and a modern spined blade may be loaded, but where's the fun in that? It was clearly not designed for spined blades - there were no spined blades in 1901.

So how does it shave? Quite well, actually. I don't have any Gem wedge blades, but fortunately a Kampfe Bros. blade fits just fine. I used the same blade that I used in yesterday's shave with the 1901 Star, which I had honed the previous evening.

The oversize wooden handle feels extremely comfortable in the hand, and I enjoyed a smooth close shave. I'd say that this razor is slightly more aggressive than the 1901 Star I used yesterday, but less so than the 1887 Star that I used to kick off OCtober.

Double surprise. I expected blood or at least tugging but the vintage Paradise (?) blade in the 1912 worked really well. No dramas BBS. [IMG]Again just jeans/hand stropped, soap the last bits of my DIY My Father's Face #2. The head shave with the PAL/Schick Platinum NOS /Clubman gel (no soap) was magnificent, an order of magnitude smoother than anything yet tried.

Perry is correct, it doesn't take much and the scent lingers for hours. It is nothing for me to still smell it 12 hours after applying it. I absolutely love the scent. It's a nice powdery, vanilla and spice blend. I get compliments on it all the time. The post shave feel is also fantastic. Stirling makes a fantastic product and the aftershave is no exception.

    Menthol Monday Shave
    [IMG]
    Brush- RazoRock Tri-color
    Razor- Ever-Ready 1914
    Blade- GEM
    Soap- Stirling Ozark Mountain
    Post Care- Crystal Alum
    Thayers Witch Hazel
    Osage Rub
    Bombed Aqua Velva

Another wonderful shave with my Ever-Ready 1914. This Stirling soap may be my favorite scent especially for fall. My RazoRock brush has been packed away for a couple months. It whipped up a wonderful lather instantly and I didn't have to reload it like the boar and badger. Three passes and I'm BBS everywhere. Finished up with some Osage Rub followed by the bombed Aqua Velva. Excellent menthol kick. Have a great day folks!

    Nice write up.

Interestingly enough, I found one of these 2 years back at an antique shop. I was new to the vintage razor scene and I thought the wooden handle must have been home made and I couldn't understand what the stropping handle was all about. The shopkeeper offered it to me for $20! I turned it down, but always wondered now that I know better.

If I could only go back to October 2014!

I just got my E2 in the mail today, and after only one shave it has earned itself a spot in my top five ish all time razors. I was in a bit of a hurry to finish, but still landed a DFS+, and for how hockey rink smooth my face is I am just ecstatic.

    Have a good night, everyone.
