    Grand Blade Trials

    Razor - 1962 (H1) Gillette Slim (3)
    Blade - [IMG] (3)
    Soap - Arko
    Brush - BoS Omega 10066
    Post - Alum, The Veg

Back to the Viking's Sword today and an extra shave to test low aggression on the blade. After yesterday's barely DFS I decided to see if an extra click on the Slim would make a difference. We know it does on the Personna Red and Generic but how about on this one? The BoS and Arko for a stunning lather and off we go.

First pass did sound a bit louder than yesterday so I suspect it's doing a bit more work. However, at the end of the pass the feel wasn't significantly different. Still lots to do. Second pass, XTG and a third pass ATG and Slide. Noticed a little redness on my neck that wasn't there after yesterday. I know my technique was good. So maybe it's something maybe it's not.

Alum proved that something was indeed up. Neck was pretty hot all over so apparently the extra gap created some irritation. As for the finish? DFS. Better than yesterday but not so much better that I think it was worth the irritation. An interesting result since I haven't really compared blades on 2 and 3 on consecutive days before. Tomorrow I'll go 6 and we'll see if it takes off like the rest of its cousins.

On another note today was head shave time and I had a new Astra loaded up. Definitely noticed how much better that fresh blade did over last week's blade on its third shave. I normally go three shaves with it but think I may stop at two now. I mean, come on, I only do head shaves once a week. Using a blade twice means I'd use 26 blades a year. I have almost 200. I'm good for awhile so why not get a better experience overall, right?

Another day closer to the 31st and today, a costume idea for the special lady in your life. Again, thanks to Mother Russia.

Still getting great three pass BBS shaves with the Pal Adjustable on it's middle setting. I'm still trying to keep the handle from shifting when I go XTG and ATG but WTG I have no problems. For me, it seems like it's one of two things causing it. The head being a bit heavy, or the curve of the handle or maybe both because it slips from my middle finger, which it rests on. I have to keep adjusting for it during my shave, especially when it's wet. Other than that, it's a great razor to shave with. 814+xCK4T5L._SX522_a.jpg

Thanks a lot-now I have to research Sailors Spice Soap. Ssriously, there appears to be no end to the classy-sounding shaving related brands.

From "Love My Skin". Look on Ebay and also I did reviews on this thread-- Love My Skin Shaving Soap.. Plus you can't beat the $4.49 price tag on a 4 oz. puck and combined shipping. There should be two listings of the soaps as there are many scents.

Congratulations. As I said few years ago on SRP - The biggest problem with the soviet razor is inconsistency of quality. They are generally good razors and quite decent shavers. Some of them have really hard steel and it might be a challenge to hone. General rule for them - the earlier year of manufacturing (it stamped on earl) the better razor you have. In later years, like 1970-1980 razor can be real crap.

    Gillette Rubie Platinum Plus

    Pinaud Vegetal

The L'OCCITANE Cade Shaving Soap face-lathered well with my Jayaruh #104 high mountain white badger brush. Two passes and touch ups with the Gillette OT OC razor w/ Maggard fatty handle and a Gillette Rubie Platinum Plus blade gave me a close, comfortable shave. After a cold water rinse and alum block, I finished off with T.N. Dickinson's WH and then Pinaud Vegetal After Shave. I am clean, smooth, and refreshed...

    Tallow + Steel "Dark"
    Zenith | Manchurian
    Gillette Pre-war Tech | Feather Hi-Stainless (1)

The more I use Tallow and Steel, the more I appreciate it. After having several uses under my belt, I'm inclined to elevate my slickness rating from 8/10 to 9. The water tolerance and capacity is elevated as well. T+S was instantly in my rotation upon my first use, but my rotation is getting larger such that if every one of my favorites gets equal use, it will be weeks before I see it again. "Dark" is one that I cheat with. It gets bumped up in the rotation because the scent is intoxicating. While my first impression was peppermint patty and chocolate covered coffee beans in a cedar box, it's acquired more depth with continued use. Now, I'm not suggesting the scent changed, but rather my nose may have accepted some unusual characteristics allowing others to the forefront. For instance, I still get clear peppermint and cocoa notes, but it's less candied and more coffee, cocoa, and green grassy mint. I've also discovered the "cedar" is simply a smoky vetiver, but the overall scent is far from smoky. Dark is a clean and crisp scent that just continues to unfold with use. Dark has a complexity that unfolds in a similar fashion to B&M's Leviathan. It's no secret that upon my first use of Leviathan about a year ago, I found it off-putting, only to become addicted by the end of the day. The two products' scents are not particularly similar, Leviathan being slightly murky with leather notes and Dark being much cleaner. The comparison is with regard to their development. Dark was never off-putting, mind you, but my appreciation of it has certainly increased.
