If there is one thing that wet shavers debate most over it is soaps. With all of the brands and scents out there it's easy to amass a big collection. List your favorite and least favorite soaps. My favorite right now is the TOBS Coconut scent. This soap is incredibly slick and smells delicious! Another scent I'm wanting to try is the Sandalwood. But I'm kind of torn between that and Bay Rum for my next scent. My least favorite is Van Der Hagen. The scent is ok but the dries out really fast to me and is almost like shaving with a hand soap. Face gets really dried out from it.
Of the soaps I've tried Best : stirling ( slickness ) Worst : proraso ( lack of slickness ) I have neither now .
I have quite a few favorites Stirling, Route 66 , TSF, Chiseled Face, Tabac. Probably my least favorite soap is the Shave Den lanolin sandelwood. Doesn't perform anything like my other soaps. A disappointment really. Might have to bin it.
I just got a shave den lanolin soap and I'm still working with it. What isn't it doing ? I'm asking just so I know what I'm dealing with
Not counting local soap wannabes Best- Martin de Candre or Antica Barbieria Colla. Worst - LE Pierre Lucien.
I have hundreds of soaps, so my list is a bit longer than most. There are a ton of great soaps out there, and...as always, YMMV. Best: Stirling soaps, Catie's Bubbles, Tabac, Klar, Barrister &Mann, Mama bear, Taylor of Old Bond Street, and Truefitt and Hill. Worst: Williams mug soap, Van der Hagen (I completely agree with you here). While I could easily extend my "best of" list, I won't... For simplicity sake. As for the worst...there are certainly pretty bad ones out there, but if your technique is good...you can truly use anything for soap. I am assuming you want to go the other direction and get THE BEST, not the worst...so here is my advice: 1) go to maggardrazors.com and/or stirlingsoap.com and get samples of soaps. This is the cheapest and most effective way find what you truly like. 2) If you would rather own a tub (or tubs) of certain soaps, or from certain soap makers, post a WTB (want to buy) ad here in the shave den. You will get responses...probably even from me. 3) If you want to stick with something you are familiar with, go buy Taylor of Old Bond Street's "Jermyn Street." It is my absolute favorite TOBS, and it has a huge following. It is a solid year round scent that smells fantastic. While their sandalwood is great as well, most seasoned wet shavers that I have ever spoken to feel that jermyn street is better.
Best, Martin de Candre. But I also love a bunch more. Worst, Williams, and I threw that one out a long time ago. Can't say I own anything terrible right meow.
Honestly, I stick to low end soaps; Williams and VdH, the most expensive I own is a Col. Conk that I bought for the travel container as much as the soap. I have no problem lathering any of them with my synthetic brush and they all provide ample softening and lubrication.
My favorite is I Coloniali, the worst was Trumpers Eucris. The scent is fantastic, probably my favorite scent, but I just couldn't get a decent lather out if it. In the end i took it to a Trumpers dealer and traded it for some shaving creams. Sent from my LG-V480 using Tapatalk
Bestest ones....MdC, Route 66, my new Stirling, Soap Commander, L'Occitane — all fine shaving soaps. I don't have any worst ones as we've parted ways...
You guys are doing a pretty good job of talking me into losing the remainder of my Williams Mug Soap. Maybe ONE more try.
He certainly does mean "Williams mug soap." It really is the worst, albeit usable with proper technique. I feel the best soap value is stirling soaps. Buy, trade, beg...do whatever you have to do...the difference is HUGE!
