The Yacht has made port now for a good cleaning, then off to the rocks. I hope to shave tonight with it.

Honing now. I have 3 small chips in the blade. Working with my 1k for 15 minutes. No progress. This stuff is some hard steel. Moving to my 400 for a bit to see how that progresses.

Da Comrade, steel forged by the True Sons and Daughters of the Motherland laughs at your puny "stones."

Hey, @twhite , what year is your Commie Razor? I know that some of us with 1970's razors feel those are hard as rocks. My 1953 isn't as hard as the 70's steel.

It is a 54. It is pretty hard. I am getting micro chips right now. I almost have the main chip out. It was almost 3/64" a little over 1mm into the blade.

I will need to be very patient honing this bad boy.

Are the chips appearing, or were they already there?

They were there i believe. The edge had 3 very visible nicks and some smaller ones. I believe it is those that are still there. It is hard to tell with my 220 stone. Almost ready to move on to 1k that will tell me a lot.

To avoid the micro chips appearing on a few of my razors, I kill the edge now and then, when a heavy chip or ding needs to be removed.

I spent a long time last night honing the chips out. The shave today was harsh. I had to stop mid shave. I will take it back to the stones. I had to use 2 pieces of tape to try and keep the bevel from being so wide. I may try putting a secondary bevel on this. I will re hone without any tape to reset the bevel. Then add 2 pieces to set the final small bevel.

    Any thoughts on this?

I was doing some calculations on the Russian blade. The spine is
.170 and the blade is .740. This ratio is too shallow of an angle. I am going to stick with the 2 layers of tape. That gets me to 17degees. Back to the 1k and start fresh.

There aren't any set rules. Tape is my best friend. I just honed a razor that has a well worn spine, and had to put three layers of tape on it. The last time I used two layers. This was my third try with this blade , over the past month, and that did the trick, along with some serious blade torquing, on only one side. It was a weird blade to hone, but it all came together. So, try try try again, until it works.

Working on it as we speak. It is great trying to figure out what will work on a particular blade.

i think the best part is to get a tricky blade to be a great shaver:)

Dunno Tom..Its Hard to Comment 2nd hand..I Mean a Blade that's Not Honing Up Correct or that Harsh Suggests the Work Wasn't Done on the Bevel Hone..
Aye..Just Mind Tom..Those Commie SRs Should be Crazy Sharp from the 1 K Stone if Mine was Anything to Go By..I Could have Shaved with Mine from the 1 K Stone..I Just Honed what I think is a Wee Hard Steel French 5/8th Tonight & it Was Popping Hairs all Along the Blade Mid Way from the 1 K Stone..:)

I know it is my honing that is the problem. I just need to try different things on this blade. I am not complaining at all. This is a fine blade. I love the challenge of them.
