  4. thanks for the tip, Tom :). Y'know, as I peered into the soap, I couldn't believe it was made out there in AZ, shipped across the country to me, and STIL looked slick.
  5. I am taking the weekend off from shaves.

Hope everyone has a great Sunday!
  6. Beautiful SR Jim. :happy088:
  7. Thank you, Clint! It was a great shave this morning, my first straight shave in quite a while. I am a but out of practice, but it went well.
  8. Great shave today. Not my edge, but a good DFS plus and little irritation. Dubl Duck Goldedge.

  10. Razor: Gillette President Y 1
    Blade: Feather Platinum (1)
    Brush: Omega Barber Pole w/Silvertip
    Soap: Route 66 Twisted Tweed
    Aftershave: Floid Vigoroso

Did a little experiment with this brush tonight to see if the difficult with was the floppiness, or the actual knot itself. A few "O" rings 3 to be exact did remove some of the floppiness, however, the knot did not perform to my liking. Not against the brush, it just doesn't provide me what I want in a shave brush. I will pull the knot and silicone in a couple of knots until I find one I like.
The Gillette President (I left the case and blade pack inside for obvious reasons) I find to be a very mild razor, however, with a little effort and a good blade I was able to have a DFS. The shave soap is great and I really enjoy Floid Vigoroso aftershave. Been snowing and blowing here all day, and it is supposed to carry on all through the night. We'll dig out in the morning.

  11. That is a beautiful handle; too bad you don't like the knot too well. I hope you are able to find one you do enjoy. Your set up is great.

Your razor is fantastic. I have a Diplomat, which is the same razor as the President. It is one of my favorite DE razors. A President is one my unobtainium razors, as I think the plating looks so nice. Your razor appears to be in great shape. It certainly looks great against that beautiful snow. :happy088:
  12. Monday Morning Shave
    Ogallala Bay Rum Shave Stick
    Edwin Jagger DE89
    Astra SP (2)
    Have a great week![IMG]
  13. Very nice photo Doug. The brush handle is certainly worth the effort of putting a reknotting with something you like.

  17. November 20:

    Rockwell 6s on plate #3
    Rockwell blade (8)
    Old nameless boar brush
    Old TOBS Avocado croap
    Alum
    Thayers Witch Hazel (Lavender)

Lather was better today than last time. I used a drier brush to load more soap and then added more water to the bowl while swirling the brush at a slower speed. Result was thicker lather with fewer bubbles. Went on the face in a nice even coating.

Had a two-day stubble. The razor on plate #3 cleaned it off with no trouble with my usual one pass diagonally WTGish followed by a cleanup pass more xtg. Result was a comfortably clean shave -- never BBS but certainly DFSish.

No problems. No nicks, no weepers, no irritation. Alum was completely sting-free. Put the Thayers on only because I normally end that way.

The Rockwell blade is still going strong. No tugging or trouble cutting the whiskers. I'm guessing it should be good for at least 10 shaves and very possibly more.

    Grand Blade Trial

    Razor - 1962 (H1) Gillette Slim (6)
    Blade - [IMG] (2)
    Soap - Arko
    Brush - Semogue 620
    Post - Alum

Day two on the V12 from India. Still no email reply on my questions concerning manufacture but again, nothing new about these companies seemingly rarely monitoring email. I could tell that last night's CCS finish was just not up to my usual standard but I made the day ok. Just a bit more to deal with tonight.

Semogue tore up the Arko into a gallon or two of lather in no time at all and the first pass was satisfyingly smooth and audible. Perhaps just a subtle feel of the blade very occasionally but overall not a problem. Second pass, XTG, ended with an apparently great finish and no issues.

Until - as I started lathering for the third pass I saw the nick on my right jawline about halfway up from my goatee. Disappointing, as I hadn't felt anything nor had I made a technique error. Not a bad one but enough to take a point off of the blade. I finished the third pass and alum stopped the bleeding and only mildly stung elsewhere. Not a lot of irritation, which is good, but a definite bloody spot.

The finish is a near-BBS and definitely so given the nick. I could have fudged it to a BBS without that. Still, a fine shave from a rather unknown blade.

@John Ruschmeyer suggested I could have had a V8. Well, I do love V8 but as long as it's a V12 here's something for the motorheads out there. Looking forward to opening this one up full throttle on the Slim tomorrow!

  20. Day 3 with the Crown and Crane Lavender and Cedar. Today I turned up the heat and broke out the kettle, the scuttle and a Kent BK8. I also went with a DOC DE loaded with a fresh Feather blade. I woke up a little late today so no pic.

At first the lather looked watery and bubbly in the very hot scuttle, which is normal for this much heat. As soon as it hit my face it turned into a nice cream. It held up well for the first two passes but on the third it was a little too bubbly so I had to reload the brush. All in all it performed well in the heat. Finished the shave with just a small nick, no irritation and BBS.
