Neal @NCoxSTL is Head Guy in Charge of those decisions about next months opening message. He'll let us all know when it's almost time to close out November. As to "The Rule/Focus" there tends to be a theme for most months, but no one is required to jump on the shenanigan bandwagon. I think Decadent December was projected for our next theme. . September was SEptember to honor Single Edge razors. October was OCtober as in Open Comb razors, NOVember has been more traditional 30 Rule/Focus leaning - NoVariation. As a "new shaver" you may not (yet) own the themed equipment. Even if you did no one is required to step in line here. It's all about sharing your experience, and asking questions of others when you have a problem. The 30 Day part breaks learning technique into manageable chunks. You did well by adopting the format and going solo. Now that you're here it's like an A.A. meeting and the goal is to leave bad shaves behind. Unless someone comes up with a foolhardy challenge involving popsicle sticks, DE blades, and staplers. (I'm training up with my Weck shavette to be ready next time!)
The shave on Thursday was good enough that I didn't need to shave yesterday. Today I got called in to work early and did not have a chance to shave. Looks like I will have to wait until tomorrow.
Stuff happens. I hope you healed up OK. G3 is my birth quarter. I'd enjoy seeing a photo of the razor sometime. So true. Neal's Bride deserves something more along the lines of a two-week trip to Hawaii. I'll give him props, though, for buying her a case of paper towels for the occasional shaving boo boo.
G3 is my birth quarter as well. I was very lucky to get this Aristocrat Adjustable as a PIF from @Norcalnewb from last year's Birth Quarter Secret Santa. Agreed.
Popsicle sticks? I can't imagine anything ridiculous like that around here. Nope, not on my watch. Oh, wait.........
I'm so sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. I lost my Dad in 2001. Dealing with his loss was one of the most difficult times of my life. Hang on to those great memories, and keep your photo album handy. It takes time, but things will get better. Praying for you today.
Welcome! As the unofficial official leader of the band, and the even more unofficial official Russian Blade Czar, I have to say you started with a very fine example of Russian steel with the Gillette Silver Blue. And, the 38c is a great choice too. Really great setup you've got there. The group rotates on the first of every month, though I usually start up the new thread the last day of the month. I always post a link to it when it's ready. As far as the theme for December, DECadent December has been suggested. Not sure yet what/how/ or anything else....but as has been mentioned, you're under no obligation to follow the theme. And, whatever you choose to do, Rule or Focus, it's never engraved in stone. It is a great place to learn technique, perfect technique, learn new technique, have a lot of fun, put up or join in with the shenanigans and generally enjoy the company of a bunch of great people who love shaving! Always feel free to ask anything and I guarantee you'll get an answer. Usually the right one too!
Welcome to the 30-day crew! It's never too late to start, and you have a nice setup! Route 66 is a fantastic soap, as you can probably tell by the number of folks using it. Check it out here.
November 26 Gillette New LC razor Astra SP blade (2) Kent BK8 brush Tabac shave stick Alum, Thayer's Lavender witch hazel, unrefined shea butter, and Pinaud Clubman aftershave I skipped yesterday's shave, so it was a treat to mow down two days of growth with the New LC this morning. My shaves are nearly always closer after skipping a day. I have a light beard, so I attribute better shaves to the blade having more stubble to grab. Five hours post shave, and my face feels great. I won't turn my back on my beloved Feathers, but I sure do like St. Pete's best, Astra SP's. I had no idea that a Florida-based company manufactured such great blades. I've also learned this month that I get a closer shave on my neck by shaving diagonally down from jaw line toward my Adam's Apple on the second pass. This is probably closer to a true ATG pass for my beard growth. Baby steps in my technique like this help me continue optimizing my two-pass shave. As a fall back when I'm short on time, my one-pass shaves are usually pretty good too. I finished today's shave with Clubman, as I normally do on a Saturday. It was my first aftershave, and it brings back nice memories of going to the barbershop on Saturdays as a kid. However, when it's gone, it's gone, as I like other aftershave scents much better. Like a few others here, I'm also working down my soap inventory over the next few months. I'm nearing the end of my Tabac shave stick right now. I spent some time today catching up on the thread. It's wonderful to see new members joining the group, and it's always inspiring, educational, and only occasionally frightening to follow everyone's progress. Have a great Saturday!
