1. "Every thing happens for a reason".... it's always delivered in a positive sense but... can't really apply this phrase to war-torn Congo ... or Aleppo ... or.... just read history or the daily police blotter and have your pick.

  2. Flare versus Flair. Very often confused here on the Den. This is a Flare Tip. image.jpeg
Notice how the Tip Flares out?
    This is Rick Flair.

He had a flair for wrestling.
    In summary:
Flare: A gradual widening. (Or a sudden flash of fire or bright light).
Flair: A special or natural talent. (Or stylishness and originality).
    (Steps off soapbox)

  5. No, you can apply that phrase to Aleppo, the police blotter and much of history. You just have to complete the phrase correctly:. "Everything happens for a reason ... and the reason is that many humans are (selfish and immoral) ..."

The times that phrase really irks me are when it is applied to things like earthquakes and tsunamis... Usually in a pious tone of voice by someone giving it as an excuse for doing nothing whatsoever to try to help -- thereby proving once again that many humans are (selfish and immoral) and they're in that number.

  8. "God doesn't give you more than you can handle."
B.S. God isn't giving you things to handle for one thing. For another, if you find yourself dealing with something you cannot handle, which people do, then apparently your faith is flawed? No, that theological stance is flawed. This also gives sanctimonious types a way out of helping those in need.

"There but by the grace of God go I."
Really? You think that person or group has received less grace from God or that God somehow likes you better? No.

"(He/She) is in a better place."
That may or may not be the case, but it's certainly cold comfort at the moment.

  13. I probably already discussed my annoyance with "going forward", so I'll let someone else do that one(if he or she feels my pain).
