Da comrades, it has been too long since shaving with my 1961 Paketa. To celebrate I paired it with the pin commemorating the launch of Yuri Gagarin into space that same year. Da, it had been too long. You just can't beat the Russkie for shave reduction and ease of use. Another great shave. I have 4 more Russkies at various stages of waiting in the wings. Stay tuned. ...I think he Bends Spoons an All..Och Naw..That was that Plonker Uri Geller.. Too funny - I'm splitting my ribs over here.
You have Honed & Shaved with a Russkie SR for the Glory of the Motherland Comrade..Welcome To the Commie SR Party..:rah: Billy..
My 1954 Yacht Very nice shave tonight. I reset my bevel with 4 pieces of tape. This blade is a full 3/4 but the spine is only .175. This geometry makes for a very large bevel. In the range of 1.5to2mm. With 4 layers i was able to get it down to .5to.75mm. I am hoping this will give me a more robust edge. The prior edge got very wavy after a few shaves. It is too fragile. Interesting fact about yours "Yacht" - razors made in 1950's and razors made in 1960's with same name have different form and width of blades. First picture 1950's 3/4, second - 1960's 5/8
The Geometry or the Angle Between the Spine & the Blade Should be Factory Set to Set the Bevel on the Hone..If its Not..Then..That Suggests to Me a Dud Razor has Gotten through Quality Control Regardless of the Size of the Various Blades & Companies that Manufactured them..4 Layers of Tape is a Lot of Tape to Say the Least to Set a Bevel on an SR without Any Apparent Hone Wear.. Billy..
I agree. Does anybody else have a 3/4 Russian blade. If so what is their spine width? The blade takes a wicked edge. If it holds up, I have no problem using 4 layers of tape. Tom Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Mine is a 1/2 Hollow & Without Measuring it has the Same Spine Width of Any Other Hollow Grind 5/8th SR in My Collection..I haven't Anything to Measure it at Hand But it Looks Visually the Same.. Billy..
So i measured my Columbia it has the same 3/4. The spine is .195 with some wear on it. The Yacht measures .165 no wear on the spine. I ran the numbers thru the angle calculator. It requires 4 pieces of 7mil tape to get the angle to 17.7 degrees. I am curious to see what my other 3 Russian blades are, when I get them. Tom Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Tape is just tape, it's cheap. It's not like you need it to shave. I've had to put three strips on a couple, and 8-9 on the Sweeney Todd. Tape it up, and hone it up.
The only problem I can see with the tape, on the Russians, is that the tape will need changing, halfway through the bevel. I had to on mine. It took so long, the tape wore out.
Well..The Thing is..If an SR is NOS or Free from Hone Wear it Doesn't Need all that Tape Unless its a Factory Dud..I Would Send it Back or Throw it in the Bin.. Billy..
