No, I don't mind at all.

Aunt Kathleen's passing came at the end of a long bout with colon cancer and, in its way, was a blessing to her and the rest of the family. It's still hard, though, as this was the second death in the family in as many months.

Thank you all for your expressions of concern and sympathy. I almost feel I should apologize for putting a damper on the shenanigans. (I'm waiting with bated breath for Neal's attempt to use a Russian adjustable on '7'.)

Please excuse me for not replying to each of you individually.

I am leaning towards the New as well. I am really going to pare down my non-straight razor collection. I do want a couple of users to keep for me. I do love my straights. Its really funny to me how badly my technique has suffered from not using it with DEs. I am sure a week's worth of shaves with the same razor would take care of it, but I can't seem to do that. As far as saving money, I have tried to explain to my wife how to research what the straights are worth, and let her know that it is a valuable collection. The fact that its kind of like a savings account should offset the money spent, right?

One of my buddies I am going with looks a bit like that after missing a shave. Me, not so much!

Sneaking in a couple of last DE shaves before the January shavette focus.

    -Gillette Slim set on 5.
-Kai blade (first time using one)
    -RazoRock Plissoft Big Bruce brush
-RazoRock Tuscan Oud soap with a touch of Kiss My Face shave cream

Holy cow, what a shave! I had not used the Slim in some time. It was good to put it into use again. The Tuscan Oud mixed with the Kiss My Face was fantastic. Lather like never before. I learned two things from this shave. The Kai on 5 has fairly well cemented for me that I prefer a sharper blade. And adding a touch of Kiss My Face to any soap makes it that much better without negatively affecting the scent. This was my closest shave to date, and my face felt great after.

    Razor: Gillette Slim K 4 1965
Blade: Voskhod Bocko II Teflon (6)
Brush: Elite Razor "Tres Amigos" Desert Ironwood Beehive w/Synthetic
Soap: Route 66 High Mountain Mist
    Aftershave: Fine Platinum

A fine 3 passes with a slight clean up for a very near BBS. I really like this synthetic brush, of course it doesn't hurt that it has an amazing handle.
Fine Platinum is one of my top 5 aftershaves. Been snowing all day, so I'll do the driveway in the morning. Be safe all!

Hey, it sounds kind of like "I wasn't planning on buying this dress, but it was on sale, so I really saved us money" logic to me.

Decedent December with Haslinger and Rocnel adjustable.

Turned up the heat on the Haslinger and while it performed well it was defiantly not as good as without the heat. I finished with a long lasting BBS but I think I went for the epic shave with a little too much gusto and had some irritation and a weeper.

This is the fourth shave with the Rocnel adjustable so some comments are in order. First this is an expensive razor, I am sure to some it will seem insane and the prefer a reasonable priced vintage razor. This is such a subjective thing I will not touch it.

The build quality and engineering of this razor is exemplary, I have owned some of the big name stainless steel razors, ATT, BBS-1, DOC....etc. The Rocnel has the best fit and finish of all the stainless steel razors that have passed through my hands. My only minus is that when at it's minimum setting the 1 does not line up with the line.

This is a heavy razor, which I prefer, if you like a light razor this is not for you. The adjustment mechanism is very clever and works smoothly. The razor can bet set from wild to mild and consistently got a good shave from it. I prefer it all the other adjustable that passed through my den including Gillette Slim, Merkur Progress, Merkur Vision and my beloved Merkur Futur.

At this point I am not sure if I would place above my fav DE, 2011 R41 but I am thinking about it.

Nice razor, Chris! I'll have to give your soap-rinse-soap pre-shave prep a try. :happy088:

We've had a warm spell here the last few days. A bit of snow is expected tonight, though. Tomorrow is my first day of retirement, and I'm driving my Bride to work. It's her next-to-last work day - her final day is Jan. 31 with a month's vacation leading up to it. We've carpooled to work for 30 years, and I can't bear to see her drive by herself on slick roads. I'll run errands and maybe visit a buddy while she's working, and then we meet friends for dinner. Have a great Friday!

Yeah, it doesn't quite work, but a quick interjection of "How many pairs of knee high leather boots do you actually need? You can wear a different pair every day for more than a week." is sure to calm the discussion down and make her see reason about my razors.

(Note, this argument works much better when the costs of your razors are not exceeding the costs of her boots. Also, use your best judgment on when to use these type of statements. While she is holding an 8/8ths wedge with a j-nat edge is not the best time.)
