Thanks for describing the Maggard brush so well. That brush might be the ticket for a travel setup.

That is actually what I bought it for, was to replace my Simpson Classic 1 synth that I found too small, had too much backbone and was impossible to splay. This one is perfect. Not sure how a guy can go wrong for the $12.

Love it every time I use it. It is one I plan to keep around. It will be my traveling face freeze this year at work. Last year was Glacial Lemon, and I almost have that one used up. Better than 3/4 anyway.

That would fall under Rule 4, regarding references to preferring Brand X to 1911s OR Glocks...

I love it as much as you do, my man. From A-Z that soap rocks my world - the black licorice scent, the way it lathers like a bomb, and that cold menthol feeling. I also find, like all of Rod's soaps that the protection against dryness or irritation is perfect. I don't know if you ever tried the Glacial Obsidian but I can tell you that it was designed to be as Rod describes it "Like Black Ice on steroids!" My own personal description of it is "Menthol freezing almost out of control!" (Naaaaahhhhhhhhh, The Glacial Lemon Chill's got the same potency!)

You could make amends at the end of the month wrap-up by posting some collage photos with your reviews and comments about each shavette. Future Shavette shoppers want to know! Until then I'll stay strapped in for the wild ride.

    January 15 - shifting focus

    Gillette Black Beauty on 3
PAL Gold Thin Hollow Ground carbon (12)
    eBay artisan badger
The Eternal Tub of TOBS Avocado Cream ( croap )
Alum and Thayers Witch Hazel Lavender

I planned to spend the month rotating through my brushes in turn to see which I liked. I started with 17 and am down to 12, having PIFed one, garbaged 2 and retired 2 to collector status. I also reknotted a further 3 vintage boar brushes with Maggard synthetic knots. Having tried all of the remaining brushes, I quite like both my reknotted synthetics and all 3 of my original commercial synthetics (a Supply Provision and two Muhles). I also like 2 of my surviving 3 boars (a nameless drugstore brush and an Omega). That leaves 4 I am not sure about: a Kent boar and my 3 badgers.

For the rest of the month, I plan to focus on those four, using each for a few days in a row. I figure that by the end of the month, I will either be used to their quirks and will like them, or I will be doing my first TSD PIF.

Today I started by using the same brush I used yesterday. It worked. The lather was just barely adequate though. I need to load a lot longer, add a lot more water to the bowl and then whip about twice as long to get to where I am with my synthetics or drugstore boar. And again I had to squeeze the base of the knot with my fingers to prevent it from splaying out flat like the face of a sunflower. I will give it three more days, but so far, I'm not feeling the love...

The PAL blade on shave 12 had a definite edge of roughness to it. I will test the old blade resharpener on it tomorrow because I think otherwise I would be dumping this blade for a fresh one.
