1. Current and former...

Some know this already but I figure I would start a thread. I am getting out of the Navy to join the Police Force.

    My EAOS is April 09.

I took the testing in Tempe AZ..

    Exam = 75% (+5 points for military so 80%)
Physical Fitness = 13:05 Mile an 1/2 run (I know, it was AZ though) 30 push ups, 35 sit ups (in 1 min).
    Oral Test = Pass
    Polygraph = Pass

My birthday comes and I get a "dear john" letter. :(

    So what do I do?

Apply for every LEA in sight.

    Calvert County MD
    Prince George County MD
    Charles County MD
    Bowie MD
    Annapolis MD
    Prince William County VA
    Fairfax County VA
    Kansas City MO
    Aiken SC
Mesa AZ (going to do the testing next week)
    Border Patrol (testing in October)
Too bad Sheriff Joe Arpaio ain't hiring. :(

I just got a prep book "Norman Hall's Police Exam", I have been getting better at my Physical Fitness.

I even have Jim and a team of experts working on my Résumé (networking baby). :D

Any Suggestions, help, job offers (have gun will travel) :happy102, words of encouragement?
  2. I can tell yah im not to fond of AZ.

I hope everything works out for yah Will...and give me a holler when you ocme out here :)
  3. I thought you are from El Paso?

    Whats the difference? :happy102
  4. Nothing much...thats why I started traveling...they both sucked :p
  5. Sorry to hear that, Will - you're gonna get there, buddy!
  6. Thats too bad, sorry. I would suggest you try Minneapolis, but you need to like SNOW, bad drivers, and weird passive aggressive people.
  7. N Y P D ( 20 & out ) is taking applications till the middle of this month for the next exam. I'll check The Chief and get back to you tomorrow with anything else in NYS.
  8. Good luck, Will!
  9. Will, you might try the Ohio State Patrol. Military experience will help here as well....except you'll have to live in Ohio, which is quite a far step from AZ.

Whichever route you choose, good luck in all your endeavors.
  10. I looked into that, I think I would have trouble living in that area with 3 dependents only making 35,000 a year. No offence but starting out you poor, poor city cops

If I was a single man, you bet you bottom dollar I would do it.

    Well I am from PA...

I have applied to a few more spots.

    Prince George County MD Sheriff
    Alexandria VA Sheriff
    Alexandria VA Police
Baltimore County MD Police (Sheriff was not open)
    Fredericksburg VA
    Richmond VA
US Capitol Police (Testing 18 Oct)
    DC Metro
Arlington VA Sheriff and Police have walk in testing dates
    Montgomery County MD Police
    Montgomery County MD Sheriff
    St. Marys County MD Sheriff
  11. Portland, Oregon city police are testing. I think the test is in September. Beaverton and Hillsboro as well.

Not sure about the Sheriff. The benefits and pay are great and you do not have long winters or hot summers.

Why do women always send dear john letters on memorable days? It is so High school, passing notes instead of talking like adults.
  12. It was a metaphor for Tempe saying "their are better qualified applicants".

But now that you say that it was mostly women working in the HRO. :happy102

I don't let it get me down, the recruiting Sgt. said that they get 1000 applicants and they only have 50 seats to fill.

I took the test with 300 people.
  13. Will,

My best friend is taking the Sgt. exam in our local Sheriff's Dept.. If he gets the job or someone else that leaves an opening. When he signed up the gave him credit for his Army time.

A rather small, rural area in the foothills Of N.C. Pretty good cost of living and somewhat laid back place to live.

Let me know, I can see if I can get you two together on email or something.

On the other thing, dude where you are I have been. But where I am, you will be. Hang in there Bro.
    Ken.

  14. I am interested, thank you.

I looked in the NC Highway Patrol, but it was a lot of hoops to jump through in the application process and the 8 month live in Academy was not worth 30,000 a year pay.

    PM sent.
  15. Will

Quite right, 3 dependents in NYC is a big nut to crack on that starting salary. Other than that there is, NYS corrections ( 25 & out ) and NYS Court Officer ( 30/55 ) - once a great job but no more.

    Best of Luck
  16. It is always difficult to get your application noticed in a sea of applications. Most jobs are taken by those who persist in the process by utilizing known contacts/friends and calls to those who influence the hiring such as applicant recruiters. That's old advice but true.
  17. Update

    Annapolis Test 26 September.
  18. Will,
Since you are one of the couple of guys I respect in here I will share some advise as someone who was in law enforcement and still works for a state law enforcement agency. If you go to a smaller agency you better have experience or be licensed through a regional academy. If you have experience or have a licensed the agency does not have to spend too much money on training. I did the regional academy and was hired on the first attempt. The other option is to go to a larger agency. The problem here is that you are competing with officers with experience that are looking for higher salary. Again if you have the regional academy background your chances are better. College education plus military helps but law enforcement experience is almost a must have since it is competitive field

Another option is to go to a SO. Get hired as a correctional officer, get the training and transfer to patrol. This option is also used by many current deputies.

If this is really what you want to do then onward my friend but don't do it just because it sounds cool. This is a way of life and not something to do while you find something better and as a Navy man you know the sacrifice. I hope everything works for you If you need any help just let me now.

    Raf
  19. If only you knew the stuff I said behind your back. :happy102
  20. I was not kind to you either:D besides I don't pay any attention to what is said about me behind the curtain. And some don't really want to know what I have to say about them.

I hope everything works in your favor.

    Raf
