January 30 (Monday) - old friend day Gillette Black Beauty on 3 PAL Gold Thin Hollow Ground carbon ( 26) Faithful old nameless drugstore boar brush The Eternal Tub of TOBS Avocado Cream ( croap ) Alum and Thayers Witch Hazel Lavender To round out my brush focus month, I went back to my original brush that I bought in a drugstore in the late 1980s (and then used very little because I went mostly electric until the last few years). After I focussed in October / November on using it exclusively and practicing my lather building in a bowl, it has turned into a very reliable little lather machine. Today was no exception - it whipped up gobs of yogurt from a few swirls in The Eternal Tub. In the spirit of NB'17, I must confess that if I had spent a focus month learning to make proper lather before I bought all the other brushes instead of after, this cheap old little boar brush would probably still be my main brush and I wouldn't have 9 others in my rotation (and 7 others I dumped this month). I like the other brushes I am keeping, but I can't pretend I really needed any of them -- I needed to learn better technique with the tools I already had. Anyway, the PAL blade did a fine, smooth job of shave 26, leaving me with a DFS+ and no irritation. I have been practicing standing up straight away from the mirror to help tauten my skin and lessen the face and neck angles being shaved. It seems to be working, because I am getting a closer shave with the same number and direction of passes. That is one of the next techniques I will work to make an automatic habit.
Good morning people of the Den! Welcome to the M-F portion of my Blade Focus, GSB edition. Today, I was in the mood for lime. Sooo, I broke out Trumper Limes Shave Cream. Whipped up a really nice lathering with my Parker Silvertip and proceeded to spread limey goodness all over my mug. The GSB made short work of the stubble that sprung up overnight. Surprisingly enough, it was a one and a half passer. First pass got pretty much all there was to get. Then there was just some clean up on the lower neck and jawline(as usual). Icy cold towelx2, some VIBR, walk the dog and it was off to work. As an aside, I should be getting my Route 66 soap today as well as the Proraso Green AS and 12oz VIBR. If so it'll be off to sunny Italy for a shave tomorrow. Proraso Green cream from the tube, Omega 6212 brush and Proraso Green AS. Life is good. Have a good 'un boys and girls!
Thank you Jim. The Timeless shaves better than it looks. I would recommend the Timeless to anyone looking for a stainless razor.
Me, too! When you started that PIF, I was really hoping to grab one of the synthetic brushes but, with everything that happened at home, the Simpson's turns out to be something I really needed. A definite addition to the rotation (such as it is, ATM). Thanks again!
SOTN January 29th '48 Gillette Aristocrat Bic Chrome Platinum (3) Arko, Lemon Lime Satin Tip The Purest Crown King Scuttle Homemade lime AS Epic shave last night gents! @stingraysrock posted the video below to a thread in the shave school yesterday and I though I would give skin stretching another shot. I had given skin stretching a shot before and didn't really notice a difference but after watching the video I learned that I wasn't stretching nearly enough. After two passes WTG and XTG I was nearly BBS. I could have just done some touch up but I went for a 3 pass XTG the other direction. The result was the closest shave I've ever had without going ATG. BBS through and through and still very smooth 10 hours later. Also another new thing I tried was to put a drop of lime EO and a drop of glycerine in my scuttle before lathering. This turned the normally pleasant lemon pledge scent of Arko into a bouquet of lemon lime goodness and the glycerine helped keep the Arko from being overly drying. Finished off with a splash of my homemade lime AS and fell asleep rubbing my face! Have a fantastically wonderful day my friends!
Thank you Charlie. I have really enjoyed this month with the Timeless OC and Route 66 Soaps. I will finish out this week before moving on to other razors and soaps.
