February 2017 30 Day Rule/Focus Pix & Discussion

Like the soap and brush owe you money! When I load a soap (especially a new one), I go to town with it. I work it until I can see the pre-lather really worked up into the bristles. Once I get to know a soap, I alter this, but getting lots of product on a new soap helps me to get some good first lather.

Eight shaves on the Bic and it is finally showing signs of deteriorating. It was a tiny bit tuggy on the first pass and didn't finish with the same closeness it had previously, guess I'll finally retire it. I have been working on this stick of La Toja for what seems like forever and I still cant see the bottom of the bowl. Its a good thing that soap it such a good value but at the same time I wish it didn't last as long so I could get to trying some other stuff. Oh well, have a great day my friends!

 

Thanks-I was using the WSP(Pure Badger)brush-thought it might do me better today, but it always appears that I get just the edges, not the whole thing.

If I had to guess, your blade is at way too steep of an angle to your face, and you are scraping more than slicing.

The handle on the Slim will need to be more parallel to the floor than a cart handle.

 

Thank you, Clint. Today's shave was much better than my first one with it. I was over thinking the angle the first time. Today, I just shaved, and it was very smooth. I didn't do any clean up, as I was running late, but I was very near a DFS. The head seems to have more curvature to it than my other razors, but this feels comfortable.

 

Man that is a nice razor!

 

I believe that is the issue-the angle. Everything else looks fine-the blade is in there solid, power at 3. Angle perfecti0n may be a struggle for me, due to issues of manual dexterity. But I have to wonder how that can be, as the disposeABLE works fine(granted, I go down-to-up more with that one).

 

Paul, I would agree with everything Charlie and Jared are saying. The Slim, even at a low setting should do a reasonable Jon on a first pass. Try tilting the handle so that it is more parallel to the floor, i.e. "Ride the Cap!"

You could always get real radical and lock your disposables up so you don't have a safety net. That was the only way I actually got decent with straight razors.

Oh no, I need those ABLES . When you talk parallel to the floor, sounds like I should go from down to up on the cheeks, ATG on the neck?

 

I seem to recall that the disposables you are using are pivot heads, so you really don't have to think about they angle they do the work for you. With a fixed head it's your job to set the angle. And with a slim set on 3 that angle is going to be very shallow. You might try cranking that baby up to about a 6 or 7, as the blade gap increases so does the curvature of the blade in the head allowing for a less shallow angle. Somewhere here there is a picture showing the original instructions that came with a Gillette adjustable that shows the different angles at different setting, I'll see if i can find it.

Last day for the Feather, and with apologies to the Yakuza I'm glad to be shut of it. Never worked for me in my other razors and it keeps up it's perfect record here. The 10098 continues it's march to being my daily-daily. This time it took the Stone Cottage Bay Lime and whipped it into one of my better lathering attempts.
A splash of VIBR and it was off to another fun day in the world of corporate security. Come Sunday the GSB's take the stage for my next audition. Have a super Friday ladies and gentlemen!

 

I just noticed that my safety razors need to be dusted off. I haven't touched them since before Christmas. I'm thoroughly enjoying my straight shaves and am getting the ATG pass down. Another great shave today.

In reference to the second diagram, with your slim set on 3, the angle at which you need to keep the handle will be between 90 and 120 degrees.
