Too dark for a pic, but Reiner Gold in a Falcon with Meer bowl. I really need to find a large meer bowl.
I received a very generous gift from my friend Chris aka @Bama Samurai. It's an Algerian briar, 70s era vintage Italian carved pipe, unsmoked, NOS. Along with this beautiful pipe he also sent a tin of Orlik Golden Sliced and a tin of Peterson University Flake. I'm on the back porch now truly enjoying my first real pipe.
Congrats on the new pipe and goodies! OGS is good stuff, and just about everyone I know that has tried it likes it. A much better way to get into pipe smoking, versus goopy aromatics. Having said that, many people smoke nothing but aromatics. They're just not my cup of tea, or bowl of baccy.
No pic. Revisiting a blend I have enjoyed in the past, John Aylesbury English Blend (no Latakia in it), in a vintage Charatan second.
Mild with none of the tongue bite like the store blends I've tried. Despite the fact it's mild it has way more flavor. Sweet with a distinct raisin flavor. It was the best hour of my day.
Awesome, so glad to have been a part of that hour! I wish I could have seen your face as you smelled fresh Flake for the first time. Now you know the meaning of "pipe and cigar tobacco are nowhere close to each other in any way." There was nothing added to the tobacco you smoked today, those scents are all part and parcel of the variety. Mild and easy. That's really what also draws me to Virginia. It grows in more acid soils than Burley, and therefore is high in natural sugar and low in nicotine. The sugar in the cells of the leaf also make Virginia burn readily, and the pipe condensate is not as strongly alkaline as aromatics tend to be, keeping it cool on the tongue. Peter Stokkyebye Luxury Navy Flake would be an automatic winner for you also, and it's available in bulk. University Flake will be a completely different taste and mouthfeel, and though it's a somewhat unique, barely aromatic tobacco, it's a good starting point for finding out if you like Burley and casing/dressing at all. But it shares some of that flowery perfume and raisin/fig scent that Golden Sliced displays. Oh yeah....welcome to our little pipe thread, officially this time!
Time to stock up with an order from P&C. The code IPSD17 is good for a 20% discount. I added several tobacco's I haven't tried yet. The Chatham manor is a particularly good deal. They've got a sale on it now, and after 20% off it's only $17 for a 14 ounce tub. I guess the coffee is a freebie they throw in. Unfortunately they are out of the Stokkebey flake 8 oz bags at $16 each. You can't even buy them on backorder.
Up way to early. First pipe Baki Meer with Paul's Morning Smoke Next up Sav Series III Author with a fantastic blend by a member of the local pipe club
CH & Perique in the Peterson System. Headed to my parents home for a lively afternoon of spare bedroom furniture shuffling, followed by sausage gravy an biscuits supper. They know how to get me to the house! Tapatalk Via Kyocera
A nice cup of French roast to go with my Orlik Golden Sliced in my Italian Algerian briar pipe. Does anyone else salt their coffee grounds before brewing?
I'm hitting up some antique stores today and I'm thinking about getting an old Zippo. I hear the new fluid doesn't have that distinctive taste. Are Zippo's good for pipes? I've been reading about the Thunderbird insert, anyone use it?
Zippo is all I use. If you find one at an antique store, you can send it in to zippo and request a pipe insert for it and they'll give you one for free plus they will fix the case if needed (replace hinge for example if worn). As for the thunderbird never used one and to be honest have read more negative comments than good. Maybe someone here has one and can share their thoughts.
In honor of International Pipe Smoking Day, I thought I'd share one of my favorite shopping sites. http://pipestud.com/pipe-tobacco-tins-page-1/ offers some great aged tobaccos, and has some very nice high end estate pipes. There's a killer sale on some GREAT GL Pease blends today, but unfortunately I can't participate due to empty pocket syndrome...
I didn't have much luck with the Thunderbird insert. My experience with cheap butane lighters is the igniter often quits working or the fill valve starts leaking. Currently I have a Flexiflame lighter I bought at a grocery store for $1.88. Surprisingly it's refillable. I don't think it will last very long though.
