I am 100% opposed to Zippo for pipes. The white gasoline (forget about odor for a minute) burns hotter and wetter than a match or even butane. My $.02
True, but if there's a breeze the matches and butane have problems. I like matches the best if it's calm, and surprisingly (at least to me) I'm beginning to prefer these cheap Maya matches. They are short but made out of cactus quills and don't seem to burn as fast as wood matches.
I didn't find a Zippo I liked but I picked this up. It's a Kaywoodie 45C Relief Grain. If anyone can help me with info on it, especially cleaning, I'd appreciate it.
Here's a pretty good short guide on cleaning and restoration http://pipesmokersforum.com/community/threads/pipe-cleaning-for-newbies-novices.29205/
Nice, the stinger is intact. It's part of the system but some users cut off the end to make them easier to clean.
Yes. And if you don't like it, don't cut the stinger out. Sell it. They don't make those anymore. And yes. A big score. My best smoking pipe is a Kaywoodie of that same stinger system. It's wonderful for on the go smoking and can be cleaned hot. I hope it turns into a fave for you too! The last time those pipes were made they retailed for $22-$36 depending on shape, bend and finish.
Many antique dealers are simply unaware of tobacco pipes. They put a price on it, you paid it, everybody thinks they win. Big score.
I DO respect your opinion and mine may be skewed by using a zippo for over 30 years back when the fuel had a very distinctive odor. The new formulation is not even close is smell and performance, much better now IMO. And nothing beats a zippo outdoors. Now having said that, I ordered yesterday this butane was on sale plus the additional 20% off, it was reasonable to try (39 bucks, normally around 60). Now that I have wife's approval to smoke in garage (added a HEPA unit and ionizer, which does NOT omit ozone and a Lampe Berger almost zero smell left over) I figured I would give butane a try plus when I go to my club meetings. Still won't replace Zippo when outdoors. @Bama Samurai no matter what one uses, as long as it's a soft flame, don't burn the rim of pipe and lights baccy, it's all good.
I am only against Zippo for me and my pipes, and just sharing why for Ben. If you like using them, by all means! I used one for cigs years ago, and think cigs tasted weird without it. My advice is do what suits you, except for Latakia.
I just won a similar unsmoked Yello-Bole Thorn, I believe from the days when Yello-Bole was a Kaywoodie second. Even though I'm not a fan of stingers, I look forward to receiving it.
