I've alerted the Moscow main office and they have a full military parade scheduled for tomorrow. Awaiting the official designation of a holiday in honor of this most momentous event.
It takes some of the fun out of using a razor if one has to run through a regimen of skin stretching exercises and buff until the top two layers of skin are sanded from your face, in order to get a BBS shave. I have only ever found two razors out of the maybe 75 or so I have tried, that I absolutely could not get a BBS shave out of with enough effort. That doesn't mean that's how I want to shave.
When I was a raging forum newbie, and still suffering from out of control ADs, a Merkur Futur and an R41 (2013) were two razors I bought pretty early on. I loved the shaves I got from them, and they taught you very quickly that if you did not have a light touch, you were going to get bit. Ever since I learned to shave properly with those two razors, I have never really been a fan of any mild DE razors. Injectors are a whole different story.
Once I figured out Schick G, there wasn't much going back for me. The angles achieved with an injector are impossible with 80% of the DE safety razor designs, as they are almost...too safe? I dunno... I can get BBS with DE, but I really enjoy zoning out and pulling off blood and irritation free with an open or nearly open blade.
Today was the Rapira Stainless (pink package) vs the mighty Voskhod. I used my RazoRock Plissoft Big Bruce, and the lather came courtesy of Henry Et Victoria Cognac and Cubans. Blades were alternated in a Gillette Slim on 6. Whatever is in the water lately was in my water as well. My Sunday's are crazy busy, and I was up late as the hooligans that are moving into our neighborhood lately were up to shenanigans with guns in the middle of the night. Woke the kids up, got them on edge, and little sleep was had by all. So I had to rush my shave a bit. In doing so, I rushed my lather and left it a bit dry. Because I was in a hurry, I went ahead with the shave. I usually get a great lather out of this soap and I know that I just didn't get it enough water into it. This stuff smells incredible, by the way. Anyway, it was a mediocre shave all around and not a fair opportunity for either blade. I have been getting quality shaves from Voskhods and know I can do better. And the Rapira blades have been solid thus far as well. We are talking victory via small increments and focus on minutia. So I am refraining from making a judgement today and giving them a more relaxed shave tomorrow so that I can make a more accurate determination. Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk
I cut my teeth on a R41 and loved how aggressive it was and the shaves I got from it. Once I tried a SE though it was over, I haven't touched the R41, or any other DE since.
I agree you should toss this result, doesn't count. Shaving was a chore today, you weren't set up to do a real experiment.
Modern or vintage that flipped you? I had pretty much the same response, but it was modern AC bladed razors that ruined me. I tried a several Gem style razors, and just never grooved much on them.
Wise choice to issue the blades a pass today. I'm hoping whatever this malaise that has descended upon our shaving is just a temporary passing dark cloud. My shave tonight was a marked improvement so maybe the tide is turning.
Yup. Gonna use the same exact setup under more ideal circumstances. I have high hopes. Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk
It's been mostly good shaves lately and the issues were mine. I know where I erred, so I am confident that tomorrow will boast a much better result. Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk
My first SE shave was with the Bunny however once I had to send it along (after I dried my tears) I used vintage. Started with a Type G then a 1912 then it expanded from there. The Supply Provision Custom though has ended my love affair with vintage
The Supply was it for me too. I think safety razors in general actually. I have the General, and might upgrade to the brass one, but that is really just a might. I have been shaving pretty religiously with Kai, Irving barber and Feather shavettes. It is definitely my most favorite way to shave.
