I hope things get better for you soon. Sending prayers for your father-in-law and friend for their recovery.
Thanks. It's one of my favorites. I almost brought it with me this week, but wasn't willing to risk losing it on a flight.
Thank you good sir. The prayers are much appreciated. They are both improving, but both have a long way to go.
I don't have a set of calipers to check the diameter as it exits the handle, I did buy it as a 24mm though and the knot does flare immediately after the glue plug and the handle is already restricting some of that flare.
March 13, 2017 Gillette SA-109 w Polsilver (1) Stirling Baker Street sample TGN Synthetic/Mahogany handle Thayers Unscented Stirling Barbershop Splash No pic this morning. The North American Photography Association thanks me for taking a day off from bastardizing their craft... Day 8 of the '69 SA focus, day 1 with the Polsilver. I dialed it back a bit to 5,3,1 for the 3 passes. Partly for the rawness I got after a couple of days last week at higher settings, and partly for an accurate blade comparison. Will go higher tomorrow. Another nice, smooth shave this morning. I did do one thing that I realize is very common, but that I had never done. I took a bit of the sample and mushed it in the bottom of a bowl. Did it only because I didn't want to commit another bowl to a sample. I have always loaded off the puck and then either face or bowl-lathered. I noticed absolutely zero difference, of course. The brush and soap produced the usual slick lather. I have a little bit left on my neck that I can feel rubbing ATG, so I'd call this a DFS. Splashed one of SWMBO's favourite scents and all is good. Have a great day all!
How do you like the soap and aftershave, Brian? I almost pulled the trigger on the soap a few weeks ago. Have never used any L&L products, and am intrigued by the alcohol-free splash.
Get a rubber band or o-ring and slide it up from the handle onto the bottom of the knot. I think this can simulate a deeper set knot nicely. you can then get the actual feel from your brush/knot what it would feel like.
I would use 24mm diameter as the measurement then. Before you go crazy see how big the glue bump is by sticking a chop stick or pencil from the top down into the center of the brush. If the glue bump is above the handle sinking the knot deeper will not really make that much difference since you already have an effective loft shorter than 52mm. If no glue bump is present above the handle, use the rubber band as @Fly2High suggested.
Thank you Jim. All the pictures this week were taken with my iPhone. Thank you Jared. Thank you Doug.
Also, nothing says you cannot leave it like this. No need to remove the knot then. It is only you that ever looks at that brush so what does it matter?
The others have covered most of it earlier in the thread. I would just add two points. First, a Schick G is virtually identical to a Schick E in aggressiveness but is more common and a bit cheaper. I have both and really can't tell any difference in the way they shave. The only true difference is that the head spring rotates open on the E so the head can be opened for cleaning or to fiddle with the blade while on the G it is locked in place. Second, I have often read about the Muhle R41 open comb razor being touted as almost the ultimate in aggressive DE razors. I have never tried one myself, precisely because I don’t want a super aggressive razor, but if high aggression is what you want, it should definitely be on your list.
