I Just Finished My French Special Monneret 6/8th on My Newly Acquired Surgical Black Arkansans Stone..I Pre Finished this Razor on 20 K Lapping Film with a Naniwa Super Stone Progression at its Tail..This Black Arkie Picked Up the 20 K Edge No Problem & Refined it..Its Got a Wicked Sharp Edge but Buttery Smooth.. It was Flat when I Received it & I Lapped it Up to 1000 Grit & Lightly Chamfered the Edges n Corners..It Performs Pretty Much Like My Arkansas Translucent Stone although this One here is 6 Inches in Length & Easier to Use than My 4 Inch Long Translucent Stone..I Use these Stones in the Hand for that Extra Feel & Sensitivity.. This Black Stone Just Maybe Slightly Harder going by Lapping it..Not Sure..The Difference is Probably Down to the Fact that's its Obviously a Different Stone Rather than Black Arkies being Harder then Translucent Arkies Per Se.. I Am Blown Away by How Easy these Stones are to Use & by their Performance..Plonking a Higher End Grit on these Stones Works Well for Me..Plonking Down a 12 K Edge Just Creates Slurrey that I Don't Want on a Finisher..Slurrey to Me is a Barrier on a Finishing Stone.,Plonking Down a 16 K or 16 K + Edge on this Stone Really Works Well..Any Hint of a Change in Colour of the Oil No Matter How Slight I Clean Off the Stone & Refresh the Oil & Keep it Clean as a Whistle.. A Belter of an Edge..My Next Shave.. Billy..
So, when you say the Black Stone is harder than the Translucent Stone, are you saying that it might be a higher grit rating? BTW, nice write-up.
It Might be a Tad Harder..Not Sure..Natural Stones Vary Anyway..Both of these Stones are Very Hard & have a High Grit Finishing Capacity..If there is a Difference its a Balls Hair of a Difference is All.. Billy..
There is No Progression between these Stones..They are So Close..No Need for Both in My Progression.. Billy..
Scott..Get an Arkie..You Wont Regret it..The Only thing I will Say is this..The Progression Needs to be Bang on the Button..Any Mistakes in the Progression will Not be Forgiven by this Very Hard Stone..I Mean None..It Just Wont Work..Thats Clear as a Bell to Me.. Billy..
I have a Norton white transleucent Arkie coming on Thursday. It's not very big 1"x4"". We'll see how it goes. While verifying my order, it looks like I have two coming. Oops.
6x2 Surgical Black ordered. Question: Since this is a double sided stone, would it benefit lapping one side with a 400 grit paper, and the other side with a 1000 grit paper? You could possibly change the aggressiveness, and wouldn't have such a large leap in progression from a 15k to the Black Arkie stone.
Yes you can do each side differently. I was planning on doing that, but changed my mind. I use the Arky as my final stone. It is getting a bit better each time. I believe it is from the stone getting more burnished with each use. Just my novice observation. Feel free to try different things. That is how we learn. The. Are you finding it is getting more burnished over time? If so has it evened out? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
today i honed this wosty pipe 5/8.it`s not a because of much pitting, was a pita to hone and had to remove some steel to get to good steel.the blade also has a lot of warp.finished on the ZG
has not noticed any change.but i use a lot of oil.so it`s well lubricated. maybe it has something to do with it.i don`t know. maybe i use too much?
Right..Early Days for Me with this Stone..But..I Lapped My Translucent at 1st to 32o Grit..It Worked Well..I then Done the Other Side to 1000 Grit Lapped..It Improved Refining..No Bones about it.. When I Got the Black Arkie Just there I Lapped One Side to 1000 Grit..I Am Gonna Do the Other Side at 1500 or 2000 Grit to See what Happens..I Personally Would Not Recommend Using the Stone the Way it Came...Lapping these Stones is Important..The 1000 Grit Lapping is Light Years Smooth Compared to the Way I Received it..Bear in Mind Most of these Stones are Sold for Tooling Work & Knifes..The Pamphlet it Came with Makes No Reference to SRs.. Lapping or Lack of lapping Affects these Stones Big Time for SRs..Its Been Well Documented & it Makes a Tremendous Difference..If there is a Secret to Arkies its Prep Work..That's it in a Nut Shell.. Billy..
Verinder St Pauls Just finished honing up my newest acquisition. This was in surprisingly good shape. I ran my Naniwa Progression 1,3,8,12 then a few hundred on my Trans Arkie. Tom Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
