was googling these stones a time back and came over som discussions on some forums.what was said was that Dan`s is prepped for straight razors and if these stones is lapped too fine they wont cut much.they are already very slow.and as i said, i got really good edges on the surface it came with.there are cheaper branded stones out there, but hove they are lapped and finished i do not know. i would at least try the factory finish first:)

The Cheap Tranluctant I Got had a Smoother Finish than My Black Ark when I Got it..I Am Going with My Experience of My Translucent Stone..I Have Lapped Both Stones Thus Far to 1000 Grit & they Work Fine..Bearing in Mind these Stones Don't Work with a Grit for Cutting Like Most Stones..I Can Only Refer to the One I Got..:happy088:

Aye..Wont Do No Harm..I Could Take Photos of Mine at the Moment Both Sides to Demonstrate the Difference in Finish..Its Night & Day after being Lapped..Mine is Anyway..At 1000 Grit it Cuts Fine..Trust Me..:happy097:

It Only Take a Few Minutes to be Honest..Easy Peasy..:kar:

Did you lap with a progression or straight on 1000? Wet all the time or last polish dry?

I Went 320 Grit..600 Grit & 1000...Took Me about 15 Min Max..These are Only Hard to Lap if they are Not Flat..You are Only Finishing them..Wet All the Time Yeah..Dry will Scratch it..The Last Finishing Laps I Done Very Light Under Running Water..Very Light..I then Buffed it with Palm of My Hand for 5 Min or So..:)

In Fact I Buff it with the Palm of My Hand Before Use & During Use when I Change the Oil Frequently to Keep it Clean..I Don't Want any Slurry on a Finisher..To Me its Public Enemy No 1 on a Finishing Stone..That's the Secret of the Arkies..Keep them Smooth & Clean of Slurry & the Oil as Clean as a Whistle..All this Moaning from Some Quarters that they are Slow Cutters..That's the Beauty of them..We Don't Want a Fast Cutting Finisher.. Well I Dont..That's Why they Work so Well..:happy088:

As the ninja from Scotland would say" two wee Arkies arrived today".
I ordered Norton stones, due to proven quality. I let the extra go at reduced cost if one of you are interested.

Why do they require lapping? I measured on dial calipers and it's flat.

I think I may understand now. This isn't lapping for flatness, but to basically "break it in". Typically a well worn hone should be smoothed out just from normal use. Yes?

Well..Yeah & No..Those Stones are Basically for Tools..They Need Smoothed Out for Razors..This is the Big Deal that Gets Missed with Arkies..So..Its Stone Prep for SRs..I Worked it..Soak the Wet n Dry..320 Grit, 600, 1000 Grit..I Guarantee it will Feel a Different Stone..:happy088:

Oh Yeah..320 is Good Enough Smooth as I Tried it then I Smoothed it More Later..:eatdrink013:
