I figured Billy would have been first on that. He must be napping.

Ok so the Arkansas did not give me a great shave last night. So I decided to go back to what worked before. Took the edge back to 3k and progressed thru my Naniwas to 12k. After that I went to my 1 micron lapping film (padded) i gave it a good 50 super light laps.

The blade feels wicked sharp at this point. So I moved on to a CrOx paddle 15 laps. Then on to Iron Oxide paddle 7 laps. I finished on my strop.

This shave was much better. Very smooth
I guess this blade prefers synthetics and paste. I now have a very usable family heirloom. VERY HAPPY.

    Tom

Me too. I am now wondering if a fee laps on the pasted strops would have calmed the Arkie finish down.

I would prefer not to use the pasted strops, but whatever gives the best shave.

Tom..Sheffield Hollow Grinds are Notoriously Easy to Over Sharpen on Hones with a High Grit Capacity Including the Arkie..They Can become Shavette Sharp with Too Much Gun..Between 12 K & 16 K Works Well..They Also Benefit from Pastes..Yeah..:happy088:

Good to know. It is one of only 3 Sheffields. I will make sure to paste those if I find them too harsh.

I was thinking I had a bad edge. I could not figure this one out. The edge looked great under my loop.

Its Said that the Thuri Works Well with Sheffield SRs..I Use My Arkie for Sheffield's but I Know when to Come Off the Hone with them..The Same with Lapping Film..Sheffield Wedge Types on the Other Hand Seem to Excel with a 20 K Edge..They Like Pastes an All..A Sheffield SR that is Dialled in is an Exceedingly Smooth Shaver..:)

I finally finished with this 'big chunk of cast steel wedge'". This Stub Tail was much trickier that many other razors I've honed. First problem was that this is about as full of a wedge as possible. It needed two strips of tape, to get the correct bevel angle. Then, it had a chip in the edge, about 3/4 of the way, towards the heel. No biggie, it just took time to set the bevel, past it, to get a clean bevel. I've seen worse. This took a while. I next noticed that the blade was a little wonky, one side of the heel didn't want to touch the stones, this required a little torqueing and pressure. Then the toe end, on both sides, needed pressure, to get it to touch, on both sides. Yada Yada Yada, it took a while, but it worked. I did my usual progression, King 1k, Unknown 3k/8k, Welsh Slate Stones 8k 12k 15k. then, to finish it off, I used my new Arkansas Surgical Black Oilstone. 200 laps on that, brought the edge to where it felt shave ready, off the stones. I then stropped it up. The shave will be the tell.

Scott, you did a great job cleaning up that old fella. Looks like he's got several more lifetimes of shaves left :happy088:

Thanks. I had to get creative with the scales, and the honing. It's a nice solid razor, for less than $6.

Haven't you heard it's not nice to steal? Way cheaper than a disposable :happy088:

    Hello, I'm new here.

I've got a few straight razors and I've honed them. That didn't seem like much of a challenge since they were already in good condition. But a few days ago I bought this antique (according to Google, it's probably from the 1920's). Considering its age, it was in good shape, but definitely not fit for shaving. So this was the first real test for my sharpening skills. After one attempt to hone I could shave with it, but it wasn't pleasant. So I just honed it again and will find out tomorrow morning if it's any better

    Boker "Pearl" on a Thiri
    [IMG]
I decided to see how my Boker would take a Thiri finish. So I went back to my Naniwa's 3&8k. Then 1 made a light slurry with a hard black Arkie. Started doing laps and thinned out to only water. Then gave it a go on my Drygulch American Bridal.

    Shave was nice and comfortable.
