It was actually a remarkably sane shaving related question. Unusual for this group but more than appropriate

    Screwtape A Shaving Butterfly

April 8 (Saturday) - Pride goeth before a fall and an haughty spirit before the application of the styptic pencil.

Gem OC MicroMatic / Gem PTFE ( 2)
    Alluminati Envy White brush
    La Toja shave cream
Alum and Thayers Witch Hazel Original Astringent
    Styptic pencil

La Toja definitely is a nice shave cream. And I suspect it would also be very good for the skin if used regularly, especially for those with oily skin. It whipped up quickly in the lather bowl and then felt wonderful during the finishing face lather with a warm brush.

I had mixed results with the Gem MMOC. I was careful to start with the cap completely flat on my face and to skin stretch as I went. The razor gave me a good shave. I could definitely feel the sharp blade but it seemed to glide along mowing whiskers and not skin without a hiccup. I had the razor slotted into the Gem range as more aggressive than the 1912s but less so than the 1914 or 1924, especially when they aren't shimmed - and as very easy for me to use. Then for a split second, I lost focus on ensuring taut skin and flat surfaces as I shaved my chin - and a quarter inch circle of skin vanished in a flash. And just to prove it wasn't an isolated incident, the razor later turned a minute pimple on my upper lip into a second weeper.

Both kept bleeding through the cold water rinse, alum rub, second cold water rinse and application of astringent witch hazel. I finally had to get out the styptic pencil to shut them off.

I would now still peg the razor at between the 1912s and 1914 / 1924 in aggressiveness with the caveat that it is also completely and totally unforgiving of any errors.

The shave result itself is about a DFS+ even though I didn't attempt an ATG pass.

Our forebearers used outside plumbing, washing their clothes in a stream and drawing water from a well. Doesn't mean I want to. Or stroke my neck with naked razor sharp steel. That's why King Gillette came up with the safety razor. Good enough for me!

Well the shavette arrived and I had my first shave with it. It went about as well as my first shave with the OCMM. I probably should have watched some videos, but I just went right to it. The left hand will take some time to feel comfortable. This is the worst shave I have had in at least the last 6 years. I got through two passes without any major cuts, but there were lots of little blood letting sites and irritation. This might have to be a weekend only thing for now so I have time to heal before work until my technique improves to just bad... Overall a fairly successful first try.

Thanks Clint. Still snow in the woods. Heading out at 9am. Might have to wait a little if there is frost overnight. It will be excellent to be outside in the sun for awhile.
