I understand now. I tested on my arm. It really is when the blade touches the skin that IS the proper angle.

Thank you. I did have good luck because I did a 2 pass BBS with my Gillette Aristocrat with very little irritation.

Yup. Used a Big Ben Super Stainless. I don't think my skin likes stainless uncoated blades as much as coated stainless blades. Exceptions: Personna GEM Super Stainless & Gillette 7 o clock super stainless (Russia).

My dad taught it to me, and never used a picture. He would be amused by the idea

Go by feel; rotate the razor until you just feel the blade gliding over your skin. That's your angle.

Remember that the angle you are looking for is the angle of the blade to your face. The geometry of the head will make the angle of the handle vary from razor to razor, or between settings on an adjustable.

That's why you need to go by feel, in my opinion. Memorising a fixed angle doesn't work as well.

Great explanation! I've always tried describing it as shaving with the blade and cap touching the skin. And not the blade and guard touching.
But I think you have a better way for others to understand

Hi @Bama Samurai -- thanks for all your help! A request... could you drop links to your P2 & P3 posts into your P1 post for quicker reference?

Thanks! Hey, anyone have a YouTube video I could recommend to a friend I've just gotten interested in DE shaving? I've seen plenty of videos, but not ones that specifically refer to riding the cap. English isn't his first language, so I think a video might be a better option.

The videos I started with were by Geofatboy from ShaveNation. com. Good info and very entertaining.

About to embark on a journey with my newly acquired 1911 OLD, so I reread this to get my mind right. I'm thinking that if things go as well as I think they are, I may be down to a two razor rotation, my NEW & this OLD. Of course there will be guest appearances by my other babies as the spirit moves me :)
