Spent a good portion of my day away from my Command Center. Catch up conversations commencing; Thank you, @Screwtape. I read @Shave Fu's post, and realized I had overstepped boundaries. His path is his own. My suggestion was meant to illustrate the thing that many shavers do. It's what I have done. Through good luck at antique / thrift stores, I picked up a Fat Boy while I was quite Newbie and Adjusted my way from mild to aggressive razors. Using first Generic Israeli DE's - Personna Red's - and working up to Feathers I've conquered a range of blades. Many other DE's and blades in between, but that was my path to my best shaves so far. Injectors, straights, and shavettes are becoming the same thing to me*; all sharp things in different forms to do the same job. *( @Bama Samurai - How's that go? "All razors are the same"? ) +1! As a Grandfather ( I'm Pawpaw to mine ) I get to sugar em up, and send em back to their parents. Good times.
Actually, you'll just become a master at Astra/Weishi. It's a good razor combo, and if you like the results....
Arko Adjustable April!!!!! April 14 Razor - Soviet Consul Blade - (1) Soap - Arko Brush - Wolf Whiskers Custom Silvertip Post - Alum Switching back to the Soviet Consul. When I got it they included a vintage tuck of Sputnik blades, the "Gillette Voskhod". So, I decided to use a new Sputnik in it for a couple of days. I set the razor on 6, which is more like about an 8 on the Slim/Fatboy, just to see what kind of sweet spot I might hit there. Arko stick and the Wolf Silvertip for a great lather and that luxurious feel. I almost forgot to soak the brush first though after using synthetics for a few days. Had to slow down and take a minute for that. I love the fact I found a Soviet razor that actually works. The Sputnik was incredibly smooth tonight, which was an extra treat. It's almost like putting the Russians together made them both work better than if they were alone. Great feel, no issues and the baby is in the house after two passes. Very nice shave and very fun to have it work that way. I may just hold this setup for a couple of days and see how the Sputnik holds up. Or, I may get bold and open it up to 9 and live life on the edge. Holiday weekend is upon us. I'm off on Sunday so will have some extra time then to really catch up around here. They've got me hopping right now at work. I'm ready for my three day "weekend" coming up. Have a great Saturday!
Congrats, nice family photo. Thank you, the bold part is my aim too. I don't think it will become something like a hobby. I started it, mostly because it was a way to remember my late father, who was a wet shaver. Aside from that, i can see me liking rotating blades and well, 2 razors. But, my aim is to be able to shave without leaving my blood in the sink. Nice photo. I was a hobbyist photographer during my first university years and i appreciate it as a photo composition. Interesting lathering bowl too. Nice colour. I would probably break it within a week, though, during some accidental manouver while shaving. I can confirm. From a quick googling, i found that the change occured somewhere between 2012 and 2013. Don't worry about it, i understand you wanted to show me the normal evolutionary scale. Well, i want to be able to shave with the Weishi and the EJ DE89 in rotation, while rotating blades too and not cutting myself. I mean, Astra will become my "best blade", there is no doubt about that. But, since boredom is the biggest enemy in shaving (i was bored to death with cartridges, to the point i was trying to postpone shaving), i intend to keep some other blades, besides Derby and Astra, to change a bit things. What i want, is to be able to switch blades and having a good shave without cutting myself in these 2 razors. I will probably order 1 more Weishi and 1 more DE89, just to be on the safe side, cause, mastering 2 razors is more than enough for me and frankly, i dropped the Weishi again yesterday, although from just 20cm this time. Again, no damage. So, since i 've read all about Zamak, better grab 1 spare razor for each. I prefer being able to really be confident with these 2 razors, than going to a collection of dozens of razors. I like both the Weishi and the DE89 and i am pretty confident i can use various blades on them without cutting myself. This is what i want to make sure. HAPPY EASTER, EVERYONE!
The honing thing is so cool. I have only done two start to finish, and it took a lot of screwing around with the first one, because I roached the bevel to begin with, but what a cool feeling when it turns out right.
