Wow... I stepped away for an afternoon. Got back home and found myself five pages behind the conversation. It all worked out though. Especially the part about breaking out a straight and Osage. I didn't shave today so I'll be looking forward to tomorrows adventure. Toyota? Really? If MOABs have been sitting on the shelf for ten years do they go stale?
Why should i take you as rude! By no means. I try to be as open minded about it as i can. In fact, before trying other blades, i was happy enough with Derby that i ordered more (400). And then i shaved with Astra... The good thing with DE razor, is that, i actually can now shave ATG without irritation. Last time i had tried that with the Gilette Sensor many years ago, my throat would go all red. And i aborted shaving ATG afterwards. What do you expect...My best friend is a physics professor... You 're right! Maybe i could hang a weight from the tip of the razor? The problem is the Weishi FL already feels very heavy in my hand. When i used the DE89, i was like "wow, this is so light!". In my kitchen scale, the Weishi FL comes at 75g. I read somewhere that the original Gilette Superspeed is something like 58g. That's quite a difference. An April's Fools soap?! Ha! I wouldn't imagine they do such things! First, i will declare my ignorance, since before starting DE shaving, i didn't pay attention to the related products. But, i am pretty sure (recalling the TV commercials) that the Proraso Green was the 1st of the series and what made Proraso gain traction, because it gave very good bang for buck. However, it's also the Proraso that i am trying to avoid, because, although there are those who love it, there is also a minority that hates it, saying that the menthol is too much and worse, that it's menthol + eucalyptus, which gives it the final smell of Vicks VapoRub . And i am not a fan of the scent of Vicks VapoRub at all. I hate it with a passion, although when i was a kid, my mother would always attemp to drown me in it. I mean, Vicks itself, eventually had to admit reality and release Vicks VapoRub Lemon . By pure coincidence, i like lemon. I also like the idea of menthol, but for summer (because you get a cold feeling). So, i don't think i will be joining the Vicks VapoRub fellowship anytime soon. It's why i bought 2x Palmolive Menthol, because i read opinions saying that it's less mentholy than Proraso Green. P.S: Am i the only one without a gun in here???
Most of us have several. I have noticed that a lot of shave guys from this part of the world are gun guys. By the way I enjoy reading your post. Glad you are around.
I have to disagree. Using my normal routine i can use a mild razor and get just as good a shave as with an aggressive razor. The agressivness of a razor does not eaqual better shave. I agree. Well put. The issue is not if both get a equally good shave doing the same number of passes. The question is if both can use their techniques to get a good shave with either razor or blade. If the blade is sharp and the razor is not damaged the make of the blade makes no difference. I will get as good a shave with my technique from a Feather or Derby or the made in vietnam 5 for a dollar dollar store blade I normally use in any given razor. No one with solid technique will have to make 5 passes to get a close shave. People who have been shaving for years and still think they need a certain blade in a certain razor to get a close shave have not developed good techniques. There are plenty of people who have been driving cars for years that still park crooked, and are just bad drivers in general. If you have a heavier beard then your technique will be adjusted for that and again if the blade is sharp it will not matter the brand in the razor.
Now I will disagree slightly with you. Aggressiveness does not make a better shave, but technique I need to use is different with a milder razor, and if you give me a super speed, I will need to approach my whiskers from more directions than I will with an R41. Just do. My beard simply grows in too many directions, is super coarse. You say no one with solid technique needs to make five passes. It basically takes me five passes to be able to go directly ATG on all of my beard. They are "mini-passes", I have been doing this for a long time so I know my beard growth pretty well, and don't hit every spot from every direction. So I understand your point. If I only have eight or so hour's growth, I could quite comfortably do one ATG pass. (Or three "mini-passes" ) In the long run for me, it is only the ATG pass that matters on my end result, and yes, I do believe how quickly and comfortably I get there depends somewhat on the razor.
But you do the same with which ever blade right? Not more passes with one blade compared to another? I should have been more clear. There is certaintly a difference in the aggressive and mild razor. But technique means you can get the same shave from either regardless of the blade. Again given the blade is sharp and the razor not damaged.
Yes. If a blade is brand new. So when I answered his question before, I should have done so differently, but added the caveat that I would approach my shave completely differently with a Fatip than a Weishi.
April 17, 2017 Wolfman WR1 OC Feather (2) “Amigos” Simpson CH2 Jade Synthetic Route 66 Lumberjack Fine Platinum The weekend as usual was entirely too short so back to work after physical therapy this morning. A quick automatic 3 pass near BBS shave makes for a good start to the day. A splash of Fine Platinum and I think I am ready. I hope everyone has a great Monday.
A fantastic picture for spring. And now you can have a bit of a deep breath and get back to normal for a few months?
Thank you. Sort of back to normal. I have a couple of weeks work on the ones that came in late. It all starts again in August for the ones that extended. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
April 17 (Monday) - onward and upward Gillette Tech / Topaz Platinum ( 2 ) Alluminati Envy White brush Proraso Red shaving cream Alum and Thayers Witch Hazel Astringent Another excellent DFS+ shave today courtesy of the fourth Proraso cream. I don’t know if the scent is "real" sandalwood or not, but it is a pleasantly sweet wood smell so I like it. The postshave feel of this cream does seem a bit more drying to the skin than the other versions. I therefore used my Thayers Witch Hazel afterwards. If asked to rank my preference, I think I would have White and Green tied for first choice, followed by Blue and then maybe by Red. I like the scent of Red best but the others have a slightly better skincare feel to me. Truthfully all four are in an almost dead heat, and I could probably live quite happily with any of them as my only shaving cream or soap. Hope this is the start of an good week for everyone!
April 17 SOTD: Razorock Plissoft Brush Arko '40's Gillette SS Stirling Unscented PSB Irisch Moos AS IMO, the Gillette SS line of razors may make for a the best dopp kit razors. It is so easy to get some good comfortable shave when rushed or when other distractions are going on around you. This shave certainly fit that bill as I was rushed and lots of people coming in and out if the locker room, so lots of conversation. I got a DFS while on cruise control. The Irisch Moos just added to the shave. I hope everyone has a great day!
The shaves just continue to get better day by day, more by osmosis than anything. Thank you guys for the 30 day thread. It takes a bit of discipline to not get caught swept away/sidetracked in the RAD, SAD, BAD thing, but so worth it. Today I tried a Sterling sample, but couldn't smell it as I am still getting my olfactories back from last weeks plague. Good performance. Looking forward to the soap pass around soon to be headed to FL! Off to make the ice cream...
SOTD April 17, 2017 Blade: Chinese Schick Razor: Schick J1 injector Brush: Semogue 1520 boar Lather: Proraso Green Post: Witch hazel, Barbasol Pacific Rush aftershave WTG, touch-up The J1 worked quite well today. I just needed a mild razor due to less than 24 hours' growth. The J1 provided that for me with ease and efficiency. Good lather from Proraso and a nice finish from the Barbasol. Hope you all have a great day!
Gillette Tech Bulldog Perma-Sharp Super Semogue BC Texugo Iced Orange Tea Arko A very nice shave this morning. After spending a few days with the shavette, a quick fantastic shave is a nice way to start the week.
