When I know it's something my smart Alec girl friend will be against I start with a crazy plan which lets me get what I want without grief. Here are my two best examples:

When I wanted a sports car I told her I was going to by a fast motorcycle which upset her so when I settled for a sports car she happily accepted it even though she hates sports car.

When I planed a trip to Amerstedam I told her I was going to Pyongyang North Korea. She told me I would be arrested as a spy and Bill Clinton would not save me. So when I said I will settle for Amsterdam she was cool with it.

Did sell it? You have to make her believe you were serious about going to N Korea. I will send you some tapes so you can start learning Korean.

Polygamy is defined as having too many wives.

Raising my four children I introduced them to the concept of Subtle Psychological Manipulation. Picking apart TV commercials is an easy example. More complex is winning an argument, disagreement or debate by letting the other party agree with you.
You understand how it's done, Sir.

The biggest problem with subtle manipulation is that it won't work on many people. My family being an extreme example - we're just too pig-headed and blunt-spoken. The other problem is when it backfires on you.

Mind you, I can't tell you how many times someone tries to tell me "it's 19.95", and I say "It's 20 dollars". (or a similar type of playing with numbers) That, and gas prices, are probably the largest scams that fall into manipulation. (The US government has NEVER had a tenth penny minted, so I'm not sure why the gas companies are allowed to sell fuel in tenth pennies)

Boats. The regulation specify by length. Less than 16', 16' to 26', etc. So the manufacturers build them 15'11-3/4", 25'11-3/4"...
Hence the term bells AND whistles,
"On Federally controlled waters, every vessel 65.6 ft. (20 meters) or larger in length must carry a whistle and a bell. They must be audible for 1 nautical mile."

Eh. That's just normal weaseling, rather than manipulation attempts. You know, the "take everything literally" that drives people up the wall? I do it all the time, and I'm 45. You point in a general direction, and tell me to hand you "that", I'll pick up the first thing in the line of your finger and hand it to you. In this case, it's "Okay, if we can't make it 16 feet, we'll make it as close as possible." You see it all the time - especially in role playing games.

That was pretty cool back in its day. Still pretty cool, just not practical. You'd need a big dog house.
